Flexibility and cultural sensitivity helps students’ individualize the curriculum

shekhar H 25

IGCSE……. meansThe International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally recognized qualification, offered by CIE in 125 countries, for 14-16 years old , in over 70 subjects, since September 1985; taken at the Grade 10 level, similar to the Grade 10 examinations of the CBSE and ICSE or the middle years Program of the IB.

shekhar H 26

IGCSE…..Cambridge IGCSE is an international curriculum that develops students' skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving, and gives them excellent preparation for the next stage in their education.

shekhar H 27

IGCSE assessment is conducted by UK assessment organization: Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)

Two Exam Sessions every Year; IGCSE- May/ June and October/November.

IGCSE is Linear not Modular, so results in one session do not carry over to the next.

shekhar H 28

A Tiered Approach….Are different levels available ? Yes for most

of the subjects

Core : Suitable for most of the students and has average difficulty level. Grades between C and G.

Extended : All the components of core + additional topics which add to the depth of the subject. Grades between A* and E or A and C.

shekhar H 31

How does one choose subjects …..

shekhar H 32

For IGCSE : Minimum 7 subjects from any of the groups. English is compulsory. No upper limit on maximum numberOf subjects that one can select.

For ICE : 2 languages + 1 from the other 4 groups + 1 from any of the groups.

What is the grading system ?

shekhar H33

For IGCSE : 8 – point scale of grades A*, A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Un-graded (U)

For ICE : Three levels of certification other than the grades. Distinction, Merit, Pass

For Students in India, CIE provides Grade equivalent in percentage, CIE also provides

shekhar H 34

Any other requirement for International Certificate in Education (ICE) ?

shekhar H 35

ICE requirements are normally satisfied at one sitting. But ……..Candidate may get permission to qualify for the ICE in two sittings, provided that the sittings are within a 13 month period, and that permission is gained before candidate registers for the first examination.Candidates who do not qualify for ICE will be awarded an IGCSE certificate.

Some assessment tasks are conducted and overseen by teachers without the restrictions of examination conditions, but are then marked externally by examiners. Examples include:

world literature assignments for language A1 written assignments for language A2 essays for theory of knowledge and extended essays.

Assessment in the Diploma Programme—External assessment

In most subjects at least some of the assessment is carried out internally by teachers, who mark individual pieces of work produced as part of a course of study. Examples include:

oral exercises in language subjects projects student portfolios class presentations practical laboratory work mathematical investigations artistic performances.

Assessment in the Diploma Programme—students are assessed both internally and externally in ways that measure individual performance against stated

objectives for each subject.

Services: How does the IBO provide professional development for teachers? The IBO supports teachers through both face-to-face workshops and online.

The Online Curriculum Centre (OCC) is an international community of practice for 44,465 registered IB teachers at http://occ.ibo.org.

Issues: INDIAThree major issues:1. Timing of the Indian school year. The

release of exam results on July 5th for May session exams is late as compared to the Indian HSC exam results which are issued in the first week of June.

2. The percentile equivalence to IB DP grades as there is a great demand for admissions in the leading Indian colleges.

3. Need to get predicted grades accepted by more universities. Need to ensure validity of predicted grades.

Shekhar Hardikar 70

Shekhar Hardikar 71

• Progress: INDIA

• The Association of Indian Universities based in New Delhi has accepted the DP as equivalent to the +2 program in India.

• University of Mumbai / University of Pune /University of Delhi / Symbiosis / University of Bangalore and many more universities Accept students with IBDP grades.

Shekhar Hardikar 72

For professional courses like engineering and medical, entrance tests are mandatory. IB DP students are eligible to sit for these tests provided they have opted for the right subject combinations.

Comparative Curriculum Study (IB DP vs. ICSE vs. CBSE Board) underway with CIE, University of Delhi.

INDIA- Schools have two options;

A) Indian school students could sit for the November Exam Session (Currently University of Mumbai accepts predicted grades and will take students with certificates 24+)

This is sent by IBAP to schools latest by July 10th.

Shekhar Hardikar 73

INDIA- Schools have two options

b) Issue accurate predicted grades for provisional admission into Indian Colleges.

Thus an additional mark sheet is being issued for students seeking admission in Indian colleges only if their schools make a request to IBCA on a B2 form.

Shekhar Hardikar 74

Shekhar Hardikar 75

What Next?Some Suggestions

1. Talk with family and friends 2. Think about IB for your ward as a learner

and what you want out of this experience for your ward in next two years of high school

3. Visit TGES admission dept. or the Guidance Office to investigate and ask questions.

4. Check out the IBO website at www.ibo.org.
