Plenary Presentation

About NENA: The 9-1-1 Association

•NENA: The 9-1-1 Association improves 9-1-1 through research, standards development, training, education, outreach, and advocacy. •Nearly 11,000 members •International Affiliates & partners

9-1-1 in America: System Overview

•9-1-1 is the universal three-digit emergency response number for police, fire, and emergency medial service in the United States (& Canada).

•There are ~6,000 9-1-1 centers that serve a population of ~318 million. ◦ Also known as public safety

answering points (PSAPs)

•These centers can be independent agencies or fall under the jurisdiction of larger law enforcement or fire agencies.

On the Horizon: Next Generation 9-1-1

•Today’s 9-1-1 system is tethered to 20th century landline-based, voice-centric technology.

•Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) supports voice, video, and data communications between the public and 9-1-1, and 9-1-1 and field responders. NG9-1-1 also enables improved location-based routing of 9-1-1 “calls” (could be text, video, etc.)

•National public safety leaders and industry recently joined together to create the NG911 NOW Coalition, which is focused on addressing the roadblocks to NG9-1-1 implementation with a goal of nationwide deployment by 2020.

NG9-1-1 Functionality

•Replicates E9-1-1 capabilities •Adds new capabilities •Wide ranging additional data options •GIS-based instead of tabular data for location validation and routing control

•Text/IM to 9-1-1 •Files to 9-1-1, such as photos or video clips •Streaming video •Telematics and sensor data •Nomadic and/or mobile call taker workstations
