ILCD Data
Exchange
5
• The method to move data between GaBi and other ILCD compliant systems that is:
• Bi-directional
• Import and export between compliant systems
• Consistent
• GaBi deals with all mapping and conversions (as long as the dataset is ILCD entry level compliant)
• Easy to use
• In contrast to other formats. Data format, structure flow nomenclature
• Reliable
• Through internal consistency, and clearer guidelines
• Open
• The nature of the standard and its governance makes for a more open means of data exchange
ILCD data exchange
6
GaBi 6.3
• Consistent format
• Consistent quality
• Consistent methods
• Creates a method to exchange LCA data between different software and users
• Has the potential to become „the“ format for data exchange
• Essential for the creation of Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) results to be shared with reviewers, the European Commission, and other stakeholders.
ILCD: Why is it so important
7
GaBi 6.3
• A dataset needs to follow:
• ISO 14040/44
• Nomenclature
• Documentation
• Reviewed by a qualified reviewer (in
the case of PEF)
Compliance with ILCD entry level format
8
GaBi 6.3
Quality Assurance
9
• Increase accountability and efficiency of LCA work
• Track the status of all objects in GaBi databases
• Lock quality assured objects

• EN 15804 European EPD Standard
• More than 700 construction datasets now
conform to the EN 15804 calculation method
• Consistent calculation methods for all datasets
(allocation, cut-off-criteria, etc.)
• Clear attribution of datasets to the specific life cycle
phases
• Allows the calculation of LCA indicators as specified
by EN15804
• These can be used for the generation of EPDs
and whole building calculations (EN15978).

• Data Quality Indicators (DQIs) introduced for all GaBi datasets (all
datasets created by PE, in total approx. 7200 datasets, professional DB,
extension DBs, data on demand)
• PE Methodology based on Product Environmental Footprint (PEF)
requirements, further specifying the open framework set by the PEF
guide [European Commission (EC): COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION of 9 April 2013 on the use of common methods to measure and
communicate the life cycle environmental performance of products and organisations (2013/179/EU) ANNEX II PRODUCT ENVIRONMENTAL

PE
• Internal dependent review of the datasets. The formal PEF review process for external independent reviews is not yet in place.
• Each dataset reviewed by two PE experts:
• One industry sector specific LCA expert
• One database expert ensuring overall consistency
• Quality criteria are disclosed in the 2013 modelling principles.
• Based on representativeness of
• Technology
• Time
• Geography
• Precision
• Methodological appropriateness and consistency
• Overall quality

PEF Requirements – EoL & land use in GaBi PEF test kit
GaBi Databases ’13
Give customers access to features to fulfil the special PEF requirements.
Some features are expected to be changed during the course of the PEF pilot projects.
Enable use of LCIA method for land use (Soil Organic Matter, SOM) to model the foreground system of a PEF project.
Clarify the use of the method to deal with multi-functionality in recycling situations (EoL allocation formula) provided in Annex V of the PEF guide.
PEF test kit contains:
• GaBi plans in English & German for End-of-Life formula and land use method (soil organic matter)
• Official PEF guide by the European Commission
• Installation guide

PE introduces critical review process of its GaBi database with
inspection and verification company DEKRA
As LCA continues to be used more broadly in industry, companies require increased accuracy,
transparency and credibility of their data sources in order to make the best informed
decisions. Recognising this and in order to ensure consistency and quality of its market-leading GaBi
database, PE INTERNATIONAL is finalizing the first round of an ongoing critical review process with
DEKRA.
The DEKRA critical review of the GaBi Database verifies:
- Credible independent sources underpinning each dataset
- Up to date engineering know-how used in composing the dataset
- Accurate meta information documenting the dataset.
The review initially covers basic technologies, such as e.g. power plants, refineries and water treatment
units underlying many other aggregated datasets and continues with dependent datasets derived from
these core models. In addition to the datasets themselves, the quality assurance processes are also
subject to an audit.

Delivery and
installation
29
Delivery and installation
• Automatic upgrade will be delivered on
Dec 12, 2013
• Works the same way as other updates we
release throughout the year
• GaBi 6.3 allows you to work with both
database versions:
• Your current GaBi Databases ’12 or
previous versions; and
• The new GaBi Databases ’13
30
GaBi 6.3
• The upgrade will exchange PE standard database content
automatically.
• Processes you have created yourself will not be touched.
• You can work with different database versions in parallel.
• Newly added datasets will be provided in a new database after
upgrading (drag & drop)
• “Data on demand” with maintenance contract will receive the
upgrade in December 2013!
• Before the upgrade, a back-up of each database is automatically
created …GaBi\DB\Backups
