• Where do we stand?1

• Research career2

• Where is my funding?3

Today’s Overview

Where do we stand?

• Who are you?

• Who do you want to be?

• Did you want to be a researcher in the first place?

• Do you still want to be a researcher?

• What does it take to become one?

To answer this question we may need

to make some considerations about the research career

Catching the right train

• Plan your career steps in advance

• Look for the best research groups and join them

• The best research groups are not only those that publish in Nature and Science, but those who will care about your career

• When doing research, try to be creative, take some risks, fight for your independence

• Do not follow your heart, but your brain

Money is the key

Getting funded

First step

• Top research groups have money

• If this does not work, you will need to identify the funding that fits your needs best

• Ask directly if they can fund you to work with them

• Good news is that there is plenty of money out there. Look for regional, national, international funding

First postdoc

• European• National• …

European funding

• Marie Curie actions are one the best schemes to fund postdoctoral positions

• In your current situation you would be interest it in the following opportunities:

• they fund salary and research costs

• get an ER position in another ITN

• Intra-European fellowships (IEF)

• International outgoing fellowships (IOF)

ER position in an ITN

• If you are still in your first 5 years of your research career, you are eligible to be hired as an ER in an ITN

• Funding can be for 2 to 24 months

• gross for 2011 around 58.500 €/year• Attractive salary

• Opportunities available continuously at EURAXESS• No need to wait for a call

Intra-European fellowship

• For experienced researchers

• To move within EU27 or FP7 associated countries

• gross salary for 2011 around 58.500 €/year• mobility allowance (1000/700 €/month)• Research costs (800 € / month)

• Funding for 12 to 24 months

Intra-European fellowship

• Application of an individual researcher in liaison with a host institution located in EU27 or AC

• The proposal must contain a research project to be carried out during the duration of the fellowship• You need to plan this well in advance

• One call per year opening in March, closing in August• 2011 call open on the 16.03.11 and close on the 11.08.11

International outgoingfellowship• For experienced researchers

• To move from EU27/AC to a third country, with a return phase in EU27/AC

• gross salary for 2011 around 58.500 €/year• mobility allowance around 1000/700 €/month• Research costs (800 €/month)

• Funding for outgoing phase (12 to 24 months) and for the return phase (12 months)

International outgoingfellowship• One call per year opening in March, closing in

August• 2011 call open on the 16.03.11 and close on the 11.08.11

• Application of an individual researcher in liaison with a 2 hosts institutions (1 in EU27/AC, 1 in third country)

• The proposal must contain a research project to be carried out during the duration of the fellowship• You need to plan this well in advance

For both IEF and IOF

• Support from National Contact Points

National funding

• Marie Curie actions are being cloned at regional and national level (Spanish institutions lead this European initiative with 19 programmes)

• Spanish Ministry for Science and innovation offer both outgoing and incoming postdoctoral fellowships

• Spanish Autonomous Regions offer a variety of funding opportunities

Cofund

MC actions are being cloned!

• European commission co-funds Marie Curie cloning

• National, regional and institutional postdoctoral programmes are being co-funded by the EC with the sole condition they have to resemble MC actions

Spain

National funding vs European excellence

• Spain occupies the 4th position in the Starting grants competition so far
