RATIONAL NUMBER OPERATION LEARNING GOAL

Students will be able to apply the operations of addition and

subtraction to rational numbers, represent the operations on a

number line diagram, and solve real world problems. Students will

be able to recognize opposites and absolute value.

7.NS.1 VOCAB TERMSVocabulary Terms Definition

Negative Numbers #’s left of Zero (0), negative sign (-)

Positive Numbers #’s right of Zero, positive sign (+)

Opposites, orNumber Pairs,

are the same distance from zero but in opposite directions

Integers are ALL positive and negative WHOLE #’s

Rational Numbers Ratio of 2 integers (like fractions); Repeating or terminating decimals

Absolute Value the distance a number is from zero. Absolute value is ALWAYS Positive.

Additive Inverse What you add to a number to get zero.Ex: The additive inverse of -5 is 5 because -5 + 5 = 0The additive inverse of +5 is -5 because +5 -5 = 0

TODAY, MY LEARNING TARGET IS TO…

• Understand and use the relationship between addition and subtraction to simplify computation by changing subtraction problems to addition or vice versa

• Use algorithms for adding and subtracting integers

• Recognize and solve problems involving addition and subtraction of integers
