A Day In The Life Of A Hedgehog

Hedgehogs are nocturnal but what if we could see them in the day.

We could see what they encounter

and could learn more about their daily activities.

But I travel some distance.

I live here in this garden

I’m helpful to have aroundI will happily gobble up the slugs and snails in your garden.

A walled gardenCan get in the way of my plans.

I sometimes attempt to climb But my small legs are not always strong enough.

I am not territorial But prefer my own company.

This fooled the dog I curled up into a ball and my sharp spines scared it away.

A small leapAnd into the next garden I travel.

The world outside the nest My baby hogs have much to learn and discover.

These gaps are too small for meI have to find another way around.

I returned the baby Hogs to the nestSo they can rest and take shelter.

I can squeeze through small gapsI flatten and stretch my body under.

I have to be cautiousWhen around other animals.

I gobbled up the yoghurtBut found I was wedged inside. I luckily managed to wiggle free.

I can easily get trapped and hurtBe tidy in the garden.

Leave us a yummy treatWhen the leaves start to fall in autumn.

Hedgehog Street is a collaboration between the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and The Mammal Society, funded by

the BBC Wildlife Fund.

The project aims to link up hedgehog-friendly habitats in urban

environments to help them find food and shelter. It involves communities along the same road to help link up their gardens.

Thanks to the British Hedgehog Preservation society for contribution of text.
