Acupuncture is increasing in popularity as an adjunct to Western medical fertility treatments. Often, people have questions about things like; will the needles hurt, where are the points placed, how many treatments will I need, how experienced is the therapist? Here, we will attempt to answer some of these popular questions.
Do Acupuncture Needles Hurt?
The idea of having needles placed into the
body may elicit thoughts of pain for most,
but Acupuncture needles are extremely
thin. In fact, 5 needles equal the width of a
regular hypodermic needle.
People experience the needle sensation
differently. Generally, the impressions
range from feeling almost nothing at all, to
a slight tingling sensation, to the sensitivity
one might get when a single hair is pulled
out.
The thought of Acupuncture may invoke
mild anxiety, however most people
experience a relaxed sensation and often,
fall asleep during a treatment.
How to Choose an Appropriate
Acupuncturist
Choosing the right therapist is based on 3
key things; the therapist’s experience,
credentials and personality.
Does the Acupuncturist have a strong
knowledge of reproductive medicine? It
will be important that the therapist
understand the drug protocols, timelines
involved and varying fertility issues that are
related.
Has the Acupuncturist trained specifically
in reproductive medicine as well have full
credentials granted from their provincial
regulatory body?
Finally, like any relationship, is the
therapist someone whom you would have a
good connection with?
Where are the Points Placed?
The needles are placed in predetermined
points on the body that are based on a
Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.
This involves numerous common sense
questions based upon your physiology.
Included in the diagnosis is an examination
of your pulses (on both wrists) as well
viewing your tongue and observing other
physical elements relating to your main
concern (reason for your visit).
How Many Treatments Will I
Need?
Everyone responds differently to the
treatment duration, however a 3-month,
weekly plan, is often suggested.
Ensuring you are working with an Acupuncturist who is able to answer these questions will support you in making a choice that is appropriate for you.
