NEWS FOR FEBRUARY

GARDENING LEAVE

This month we dedicate our newsletter to avery worthwhile cause, and one in which theteam at EA have been actively involved. Wehave been giving our time to the newGardening Leave site at The Royal Hospital,Chelsea.

Gardening Leave (gardeningleave.org) wasstarted in 2007 by Anna Baker Cresswell toprovide horticultural therapy to ex-Servicepersonnel with mental health problems. Thegarden projects are intended to provide asense of structure & routine as well as a placeto meet, allowing the ex-servicemen andwomen the opportunity to work outdoors inteams with other service leavers who have ashared background. Following on from thesuccess of the first two gardens in Ayrshire andGlasgow, work has recently begun on the newproject, situated within the grounds of TheRoyal Hospital, Chelsea. Exterior Architecturehave helped with the design of the garden andare working alongside Tara Jeewoonarain, horticultural therapist, & David Carter, GardenDevelopment Officer, to transform an under-utilised area of the Royal Hospital into a fullyfunctioning garden with fruit & vegetableallotments (including raised beds & ladderallotments for the less mobile to dig), a willowwalkway, woodland garden and plenty ofpeaceful places to sit, creating both productiveand social spaces. The official opening will betaking place on 14th April, and photos of thefinished garden will appear in a future EAnewsletter. In the meantime, if you areinterested in coming to the opening, or areinterested in knowing more about volunteeringor other forms of support to the project, pleasecontact davidcarter71@hotmail.co.uk.
