Formed in Dresden, Germany by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Published their manifesto in 1906, using wood carving as a template

They liked woodcuts for the plain, crude forms in it.

In 1910 the group moved to Berlin, where they were confronted with the modern urbanity of the city.

They wanted to challenge the traditional style of arts, which was impressionism now.

As opposed to Impressionism, art came from within the artist, came from what they were feeling, rather than observing objects.

Putting the spirit back into modern art, which they felt had gone astray.

Founder of Die Brücke

He was influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch

Known for his Berlin Street Scenes

“With faith in progress and in a new generation of creators and spectators

we call together all youth. As youth, we carry the future and want to

create for ourselves freedom of life and of movement against the long-established older forces. Everyone

who reproduces that which drives him to creation with directness and

authenticity belongs to us.”-Ernst Kirchner
