Data Quality AnoverviewoftheintrinsicdataqualityofKiDS-ESO-DR4,intermsofseeing,PSFellipticity,andlimitingmagnitudesdistributionsispresentedinFig.2.Inthefollowingwefocusonthequalityofthereduceddataproducts.

Photometric quality Thematterofphotometricqualitycanbesplitupintwo:

Boththeinternalphotometrichomogeneitywithinacoaddandthequalityoftheabsolutepho-tometricscalecanbeassessedbycomparingtheKiDS-ESO-DR4photometrytoSDSSDR8(Aiharaetal.,2011,ApJS,193,29).Forthis,PSFmagnitudeswereextractedfromSDSSDR8andcom-paredtoboththeaperture-correctedandGAaPmagnitudesintheKiDS-ESO-DR4multi-bandcat-alogue.OnlystarswithphotometricerrorsbothinKiDSandinSDSSsmallerthan0.02maging,r,andior0.03inuwereused.ThiscomparisoncanbemadeonlyforalltilesintheKiDS-Northfield,butsinceKiDS-SouthwascalibratedinthesamewayasKiDS-North,weexpecttheconclu-sionstoholdforalldata.

ThequalityoftheabsolutephotometricscaleisillustratedinFigure8andsummarizedinTable4.Smallsystematicoffsetsof2to3%arepresentinallfilters.Thiscouldbeduetothefactthatnightlyzero-pointsaredeterminedusingafixedapertureonstarsintheSAfieldwithoutaper-turecorrection.Thescatterandoccasionaloutliersinthestandardcalibrationareduetonon-photometricconditions(duringeitherKiDSorSAfieldobservations)and,particularlyincaseoftheu-band,useofdefaultzero-pointsfornightswithoutgoodSAfieldobservations.PhotometricinhomogeneitiesinSDSS,whichisreliableto1%ingriand2%inu(Padmanabhanetal.2008,ApJ,674,2)alsocontributetothemeasuredscatter.

Thephotometrichomogenizationschemesignificantlyimprovesthestabilityofthecalibrationandannihilatestheoutlierscompletely,withthepossibleexceptionsofisolatedtilesorverysmallcontiguousgroupswithoutphotometricanchors.DerivedusingGAaPmagnitudes,theho-mogenizationclearlyworksbestwhenappliedtotheGAaPmagnitudes.GiventhephotometricstabilityofSDSSquotedbyPadmanabhanetal.(2008,ApJ,674,2),thestandarddeviationsoftheoffsetstoSDSS(secondtolastcolumninTable4)implythatthestabilityofthecalibrationintheu-,g-r-andi-bandsisapproximately2%,2%,1%and1%,respectively.Alsowhenappliedtotheaperture-correctedmagnitudesthestabilityofthecalibrationissignificantlyimprovedandoutli-ersremoved.TheSLRstepinthephotometrichomogenizationprocedureensuresthatthestellarlocus“principalcolours”(bottomthreerowsinTable4)areclosetozero.Overall,thecombina-tionofGAaPmagnitudes,extinctioncorrectionsandphotometrichomogenizationproducesthemostaccuratecolours,bothforstarsandgalaxies.Notethatthecolourcolumnsinthemulti-bandcataloguealreadycontainallthesecorrections,whiletheindividualmagnitudecolumnsarenotcorrectedforextinctionandcalibrationvariations!
