Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)and Paramedics

A typical emt works for a 24 hour period before their shift is over

They work an average of 50 hours a week

They must be ready to answer a call from emergency services dispatchers who will tell them where to go and who is in need of aid.

Once at the scene an emt identifies the person in need of aid

Nature of the Work

• Nursing homes

• 12 hour shifts both nights and days, during all weather conditions.

• If a major incident were to occur you can be held on duty.

• They might have to hike up road for a few miles.

• Hours are long, you see bad thing that can scar you.

Working Conditions

• They need a high school diploma and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

• They need 120 hours hands-on instructor-led training and 10-hours of clinical

• Also need 12 hours a day of hand-on training with medical equipment

• 14 day EMT Boot camp

• For this type of education you can go to Unitek Education

• To be successful in this career you need to have endurance and strength

They are required to do considerable kneeling, bending, and heavy lifting.

Exam

All EMT and paramedic certification applicants must take and pass the state required examination to become Florida certified. Both exams are computer based. The required EMT exam is developed by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and the paramedic examination is state-developed. Prior to receiving Florida certification, each applicant must pass the Florida approved examination. Only exam scores taken after the applicant has applied to Florida and received eligibility will be accepted for Florida Certification.
