ELIE WIESEL

~ Elie Wiesel was born in Sighet,

Romania in 1928.

~ He was sent to a concentration

camp with his whole family.

~ His mother and little sister were killed as soon as they were sent to the camps.

Brief Biography

~ He got sent to Buchenwald along with his

father.

~ In 1944 the Nazis arrived in Sighet, he was 15.

Elie at 15.

~ Elie’s father died in Buchenwald before it

could be liberated.

~ In April of 1945, Buchenwald was liberated. Elie was 16.

~Elie lived in France after the war and discovered

that two of his older sisters had survived as well.

~ He married Marion Erster Rose in 1969. She was a survivor of the German concentration camps

~He wrote the book Night which tells of

the terror he faced in the concentration

camps.

~His book has been translated into 30 different languages.

The Book About The Camp

~He and his wife created the Elie

Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.

~Their mission is to “is to combat indifference, intolerance and injustice through international dialogue and youth-focused programs that promote acceptance, understanding and equality.” It was created in the memory of the Holocaust.

Accomplishments

~He has written many other books about topics

similar to the Holocaust.

~His wife has translated all of his books into English.

~He is credited as one of the first to use the

term “Holocaust”.

~In 1978 he was appointed Chairman of the President’s Commission on the Holocaust by President Jimmy Carter.

~In 1980 he became the founding Chairman

of the United States Holocaust Memorial

Museum.

~Elie Wiesel also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States Congressional Gold Medal and the Medal of Libery Award, the rank of Grand-Croix in the French Legion of Honor.

~He received the following awards for

defending human rights and peace all through

the world:

~In 1985 he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

~He has gotten more than 100 honorary degrees from “institutions of higher learning”.
