Presentation to SDSU Journalism Class. KPBS Station Manager Deanna presented at an SDSU journalism class about public broadcasting’s mission, methods, and funding, converged journalism and how KPBS uses digital and social media, and why these elements are important for future careers in public broadcasting and media in general.

Presentation at UCSD – NeuWrite Group. 

KPBS Science and Technology Reporter David Wagner presented to UCSD graduate students about launching a career in science journalism. They were all part of NeuWrite, a science blog where neuroscience PhD students hone their writing skills. 

NeuWrite (http://neuwritesd.org/) was the  initiator. Science and Technology Reporter David Wagner participated.

KPBS Digital and News Editor Laura Wingard and inewsource Director  Lorie Hearn presented to Fellows (high school students) about how to be good consumers of news. The day’s program included “the role of journalism in democratic life” and “equal access to news through civic engagement.”

Fronteras News Editor Gina Diamante participated in the Annual Student Television Network Convention, reviewing a student program by PBS Hawaii called HIKI NO, offered insight on broadcasting, and critiqued student‐produced stories.

High Tech High student job shadow.  High Tech High student Audrey Sutton shadowed KPBS Production Services Manager Mike Jeffs for two half days and learned about production services and operation, and watched KPBS Midday Edition and KPBS Evening Edition in production. She was given access to production staff to answer her questions about careers in media.

Vista High School Career Technical Education Instructor job shadow/externship. 

Vista High School Instructor Dave West shadowed KPBS Director of Production Ena Newell and the KPBS production team. Vista Unified School District has created this externship program to increase teachers' expertise and skills in their courses and ensure that its current students will have had adequate training, prior to going into broadcasting. 

Jessica Molina and James Hayes of Sage Business and Education LLC were the initiators. Director of Production Ena Newell participated.

KPBS Director of News and Editorial Strategy Suzanne Marmion presented to the Class of 2015 Leadership North County students on the current media landscape in North County San Diego, a look at present‐day media, and gave an overview of the future of broadcasting, and how the media and career opportunities within our industry are evolving. 

Leadership North County Director Scott Gross was the initiator. Director of News and Editorial Strategy Suzanne Marmion participated.

Establishment of aninternship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment. 

Assistant News Producer Intern for KPBS News (Penner Fellow). 

Intern is employed with KPBS for one year appointment as an assistant producer. The intern works closely with the TV and radio news team to create broadcast‐worthy content focused on local issues important  to the San Diego region. The position is responsible for helping increase quality of programming in our TV and radio broadcasts that focus on local  issues and stories that directly  impact the lives of San Diegans. 

KPBS is the initiator. Marielena Castellanos was  the selected intern. Senior Producer Natalie Walsh and Producer for Nightly News Gina Diamante were involved in the selection process.
