Aaron Price Fellows met with the KPBS news team and inewsource to learn about broadcast journalism, news sources and how to become savvy news consumers. The Aaron Price Fellows Program prepares highly motivated and diverse San Diego public high school students to be responsible, engaged and caring members of their community. "Fellows" receive an up‐close look at various facets of the San Diego community, including business, culture and government. The fellows toured KPBS and had an in‐depth workshop about journalism, which lasted about a half‐day.

Journalism and videography sessions with students from Hoover High School. 

KPBS producer served as an instructor for Speak City Heights Media Lab at Hoover High School, teaching journalism, photography and videography to six students. The goal is for them to produce packages that are worthy for air on KPBS Evening Edition, ongoing class 6 sessions (2/24/16; 2/25/16; 3/2/16; 3/3/16; 4/2/16; 4/20/16) for 90 minutes each included teaching students journalism basics, ethics, social media and helped them brainstorm. The last session was a tour of the station for the students. 

Speak City Heights Media Lab and Hoover High is the initiator. Staff participant: Producer Megan Burks. 

5  3/11/16  Hosted 4 students for e3 Civic High half day Job Shadow program. 

Four high school students from e3 Civic High shadowed staff and learned about job opportunities in journalism and broadcasting. Students observed production for KPBS Evening Edition, met with editors, reporters and videographers, and toured the facility.

Job Shadowing for High Tech High Teacher and High Tech High Student (intern).  

KPBS hosted two teachers to shadow KPBS Reporter and learned information about TV and Radio broadcasting. Also hosted a High Tech High student who shadowed various production staff members to learn about broadcast production. The student assisted with the creation of a video highlighting KPBS PT Assistants (SDSU Students).

8  4/19/16  Tijuana Elementary School Students station visit and tour. 

Elementary school students from Escuela Primaria Club Soroptimista in Tijuana, along with their teachers and representatives of the Secretary of Education in Tijuana visited KPBS. KPBS staff hosted and toured 20 students, showing them our newsroom, radio operations and TV production. Participants observed station operations and learned about careers in broadcasting.

Two‐day externship for Vista Unified School District TV/Film Teacher. 

KPBS Director of Production coordinated a job shadow externship experience for Dave West at KPBS. The goal of the externship is to “enhance the skills and industry knowledge of the teachers currently education our future workforce.” Dave shadowed various staff members in the Production Department for a two‐day period. 

Sage San Diego’s James Hayes and VUSD CTE Coordinator Susie Johnson are the initiators; VUSD TV/Film Teacher Dave West was the participant. Staff participants: Director of Production Ena Newell, Various Production Department Staff. 

10  6/12/16  Presentation for Girl Scouts troop.

11  6/17/16  Marvin elementary school students station visit and tour. 

3rd Grade elementary school students from Marvin Elementary School, along with their teachers and chaperones visited KPBS. KPBS Staff hosted and toured 50 students (2 classes), showing them the newsroom, radio operations and TV production. Participants observed station operations and learned about career opportunities in the broadcasting field.

Intern is employed with KPBS for one year appointment as an assistant producer. The intern works closely with the TV and radio news team to create broadcast‐worthy content focused on local issues important to the San Diego region. The position is responsible for helping increase quality of programming in our TV and radio broadcasts that focus on local issues and stories that directly impact the lives of San Diegans.

Through SDSU's Reeves Scholarship program, KPBS staff trained and taught two selected scholars as they completed broadcast works for radio and TV programs. Program was hands‐on; scholar researched, interviewed, wrote, reported and produced news content. 

KPBS and SDSU are the initiators. Senior Producer Natalie Walsh, SDSU Assistant Director of Scholarships and SDSU Journalism and Media Studies Internship Coordinator/Lecturer were involved in scholar selection process.
