3-D Design (BIM)

Objectives of 3-D Design • Allow stakeholders to visualize finished facilities (layouts,

access, etc.) during design development. • Utilize clash detection to identify and eliminate conflicts

both within and between projects. • Efficiently manage large volume of asset data, including

tag numbers, asset parameters, and maintenance data. • Manage changes to contract documents during

construction and commissioning phases.

Potential Contractors’ Use of 3-D Design Documents

• 3-D model files may be made available during bid phase, with disclaimer.

• BIM files may be available for 4-D (schedule) and 5-D (cost) management.

• Responsibility for maintaining model files to reflect changes, and “as-built” conditions, during construction TBD.

• Use of asset database for submittals (shop drawings, O&M information, etc.) TBD.
