Domestic UIF: Is your house in order?

- Domestic Workers Act governs this industry- All employees must contribute 1% of their salaries to the

UIF.- In addition to this, the employer also contributes 1% in

respect of each worker in his/her employ. The total contribution paid is therefore 2%. The onus is on the employer to facilitate this monthly payment

- When do employees qualify? If they work more than 24 hours a month

Who is a domestic worker?

The Act applies to the estimated 1 to 1.5 million workers in the country

A domestic worker is a:

• All domestic workers in South Africa working in a private household• People employed by employment services• Independent contractors who are doing domestic work• A person doing gardening in a private home• People who look after children, sick or old people and people with disabilities

in a private home• A person driving for the household.

This is the view taken in the Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act, 2002 (Act No. 4 of 2002).
