Alma Sprenkle
Hoping you all had a great Christmas, and a Happy New Year. 2018 will be a new beginning for GWRRA and our
members. We are looking forward for more fun, new rides, new adventures, and some awesome social events.
We hope to see all of you, at the events that we are planning for our chapter.
Alma Sprenkle
CA-1F MEC
Well it looks like we made it through our first year as the Chapter Directors of CA-1F, our great chapter. We
had some fun, some challenges, some sorrow, and lots of laughs.
We started out the New Year with a really great first ride where we said goodbye to 2017 and hello to 2018.
The ride started at the Broken Yolk on Carmel Mountain road and ended at the Barona Casino. Alma, Liz,
Raymond & I met everyone at the restaurant, had a wonderful breakfast, then we had to go home, to start
cooking our traditional New Year’s Day dinner. We then met the riders at the end of the ride at Barona Casi-
no. When I talked to Mike Maury, he informed me that they had about 17 bikes, and 1 trike, with about 28
people. The ride was about 140 miles. Everyone said that it was a great ride. I would like to say thank you
Mike and Elma for heading up and leading the first ride of the year.

By the time you read this we probably will be in the new year of 2018…a year of changes and opportunities.
Bob & I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family close around you. We will begin our
adventure this year at Officer’s Conference where we will come together and learn about how our focus will
be on fun and riding. Hope you will be joining us.
We will not be submitting an article monthly to the chapter newsletters after this month. Quarterly you will
be receiving a District Newsletter along with all GWRRA members, but please feel free to contact us anytime
with questions, concerns, or just wanting to visit. We love to hear from you.
With that being said, Bob & I wish you a wonderful new year of fun and adventure as we travel these roads
together. Look forward to seeing you out and about.
Bear Hugs,
Nancy & Bob Clark

Check and Track Your GWRRA Rider Education Levels
Recently, GWRRA National has made it possible for all of us to be able to track our Rider Education Levels status,
riding courses and seminar information. This site allows you to only see your information but does not allow you
to change or add to it.
To access your information, go to the GWRRA National website (GWRRA.org), and then click on either Officers or
Programs from the blue menu bar to see a drop down menu. Then click on Rider Education. On the left side of
the Rider Education main page you will see a button for “My R.E. Information”. Click on that button to access the
log in page.
To log in use your membership number as the user name and the numbers of your home address plus your mem-
bership expiration date (MMYY) as your password. After clicking on submit, you should be able to access the in-
formation for anyone on your membership number by clicking on “View” for each person.
Please contact us if you have questions or problems accessing your information. If there are any corrections that
need to be made, please notify us via e-mail and we will forward the information on to our District Educator for
correction.

Precision Riding with a Flair!
Tigger Swing? Infinity? Roger’s Mix? Diamond Burst? Any ideas as to what these are? Well up to
a couple of years ago, neither did I. Then while attending the 2015 California District Convention
in Bakersfield, I was asked to operate a camcorder and record the performance of some group of
Goldwing riders that called themselves the “Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team”. OK I
said, but what is a precision motorcycle drill team? Merriam-Webster defines a “Drill Team” as
an exhibition marching team that engages in precision drill. If you substitute motorcycle for
marching, you get the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team. A team consisting of several
motorcycle riders and performers demonstrating incredible precision maneuvers on Honda’s lux-
ury touring bike, the Goldwing. Think of it like what the Thunderbirds do in the air, the Gold An-
gels do in a parking lot.
So how did it start you ask? In 1999, a group of Goldwing riders from Southern California decided
to watch the Arizona drill team perform at a motorcycle rally. They were so impressed that they
convinced the Arizona team to show them a few drills and maneuvers. Being instantly hooked,
the California riders decided to form their own motorcycle drill team. Thus, the Gold Angels Pre-
cision Motorcycle Drill Team was born some 18 years ago. Some of the founding (Charter) mem-
bers are still actively participating today.
That first year the team grew to 10 riders and they held practices twice a week to hone their
newly discovered skills. During the 1999 California District Rally in Bakersfield some of the AZ
drill team showed up and joined in on the performance. That was similar to pouring gasoline on
a fire. They were seriously hooked and wanted more! In 2004, the Gold Angels were personally
invited to participate in the International Drill Team competition held in Nashville, TN. The team
performance was so impressive, they received a standing ovation for two new and innovative
formations. That always looks good on the resume!
The Gold Angels are a “Not-for-Profit” organization and never charge for a performance. Since its
inception the team has focused on fundraising events such as the San Diego Toy for Tots, Elko
Motorcycle Jamboree and Camp Pendleton’s Motorcycle Safety Days. Many of the GWRRA chap-
ters request the Gold Angels to perform at their individual rallies. The team also performs at
many district, region and national events along with some local community events. Each team
member is a volunteer and responsible for the costs associated with his or her motorcycle. These
costs also include all travel expenses incurred during a performance and all practices. These rid-
ers do it because they truly enjoy it. (Continued on page 11)

So, what lies ahead for the Gold Angels? In February, they will be performing at CA-1I’s Valen-
tine’s Ride. March finds them at CA-1R’s Rally in the Valley. Contact the Gold Angels today about
performing at your chapter event!
For more information on the team visit them at www.goldangels.com or find them on Facebook. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or making a donation, feel free to talk to a team member or email them at: contact@goldangels.com Stay tuned! In the upcoming month’s I will be introducing each of the team members.

Where Can I Take an Advanced or Experienced Rider Course?
We are frequently asked where these courses are available so here is a list of the courses in California
that are accepted by GWRRA National Rider Education. If you come upon a class that is not listed,
please contact us and we’ll check to be sure it’s approved before you take it.
GWRRA offers Advanced Rider and Trike Rider Courses at various times throughout the year. Gen-
erally these are available at District rallies and at Wing Ding. Additionally if an instructor and an appro-
priate facility are available the courses may be available at other times during the year and we will put
that information out to the Chapter.
Lee Parks Total Control Advanced Rider Clinic now runs the California Motorcyclist Safety Program
for the CHP. The schedule is available on line & course locations vary.
Additionally if you are former military and have access to a base, you can take the Total Control Inter-
mediate course on a space available basis. Unfortunately they do not take trikes.
Street Masters Precision Cornering Workshop is based out of Corona and the course is held in
Rosamond at the Willow Springs Race Track on Horsethief Mile. All their information is available on
line. They do a trike class as well as a 2-wheel class.
The Honda Rider Education Center in Coulton is located close to the 215/10 freeway junction at
1301 Via Venita. Their phone # is 909-430-3000. The contact person is Gary Johnson and Mercedes
does the class scheduling. The class is open to all GWRRA Members. The BRC-2 class (formerly
known as the Experienced Rider Course or ERC) takes 4-5 hours primarily on the course and costs
$75. There also is a 7 hour ERC class targeted to Military sport bike riders.
You can call and fit into an already scheduled class or a group of 5-6 can arrange their own group
class. If a second instructor is available the class could be 10-12 students. Unfortunately, they do not
take trikes.
We hope this information is helpful.
