R & D Phase Standardization

2007 EU Vice President

Günter Verheugen

• “Standardization is a link between inventions

and wide industrial usage“

• “Standards are not enough used for the transfer

of R&D results at the time being.”

Example: Nanotechnology

Measurement and test standards (including terminology)

Terminological definitions facilitate communication and cooperation in nanotechnology and nanotechnology research

Agreements on new methods of measurement and testing are essential for scientific progress in nanotechnology research

Quality and safety standards

A means to protect users and consumers and raise acceptance levels, with a positive impact on market growth and a desirable knock-on effect for research

The work on these items will show which techniques and test procedures are appropriate for standardization.

To tackle individual problems, rather specialized scientific and often new solutions are needed, which cannot be standardized. Regarding test methods, they do not see a need for standards. but a nomenclature for nanostructures and nanoparticles would be helpful. (Note: There are activities at ISO level.

NanoBioMatters Ltd., Spain

NanoBioMatters uses a great deal of test and measuring methods, like particle size distribution measurements (laser diffraction), thermal analysis (TGA, DSC), spectroscopic analysis (FTIR, UV-vis), oxygen and vapour transmission rate measurements, optical and electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), colorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, humidity measurements, antimicrobial tests, migration tests, and compostability.

NanoBioMatters thinks, that all test procedures used should be standardized.

"Towards a Recommendation for Temperature Calibration of Fast-Scan Calorimeters"

The works of SciTe and DSM Resolve form a very valuable basis. Further investigations should be performed and attempts to get involved a few other researchers should be done to substantiate results. A draft recommendation for temperature calibration of Fast-Scan Calorimeters should then be elaborated, which could form the basis for a specification or standard.

NaPolyNet Research Group Calibrants FSC

Concerning the calibrants to be scrutinized: these should preferably have an onset or peak maximum temperature which:

• suits all calorimeters, meaning for the whole range of scan rates;

• should be usable in both heating and cooling;

• do not show any supercooling phenomena.
