President’s Letter
Greetings everyone on this snowy day in March! That’s right it is
March 24th and it is snowing as I write this. Of course I remember
later snow storms in March and even into April as I recall. So this
should not be much of a surprise to anyone that this is happening at
this time of year, but isn’t enough…….. enough.
We have had the golf courses open since March 12th, the second
earliest opening in my 20+ seasons in Rockford. But we knew
something like this was bound to happen, we just hope the cool
temperatures, precipitation and lack of play continue into April.
It kind of reminds me of the Lions calendar in a way, we have a
busy fall, followed by an even busier early winter, only to be greeted
by the Winter Steak Fry, and then seemingly nothing until June and
the Golf Outing (on June 6th this year).
On the contrary, there is plenty going on behind the scenes, and
right before our eyes. The Sight and Sound Sweepstakes is in full
swing, this is a program we support wholeheartedly for the Lions of
Illinois Foundation, so they can send more kids to Camp Lions and
other meaningful programs throughout the State.
Lion Rob Wood has put together quite a list of candidates to take
this club onward and upward (and I want to personally thank each
of you for volunteering your time so we can all succeed). Lion Jim
Zambon and Lion Bob Jarvis continue to work on getting the sign to
a more profitable state, Lion Rick Miller is chairing the 85th year an-
niversary committee, and it sounds like they have come up with
quite a celebration bash. Then there is Lion Mark Daniel continuing
to contact local venues on where we might sell candy for our Candy
Days in October.
Yes there is plenty going on with in the Lions Club of Crystal Lake,
make sure you are part of everything or at least something of what
is going on.

The Crystal Lake Lions Club meets the second and fourth Monday. There are no club meetings in July and August. However, the Board meets in July/August to plan for the upcoming Lions year.

could serve their growing community and improve the lives of their neighbors.
Michigan District 11 Governor Anthony Menke was known as a dynamic force in area business circles, and the enthusiastic leader was eager to make the Canadian Lions club a reality. Under his guidance, the Detroit Lions sponsored the Windsor club, which soon sprang into ac-tion and began serving fellow Canadians with Lions’ fer-vor. The Windsor club would later make its mark by intro-ducing Canadians to the white cane, a safety identifica-tion tool for the visually impaired.
After founding the Windsor club in Canada, Lions moved into China and Mexico. In 1926, the first Lions Club in China was established in Tianjin (formerly Tientsin). A year later, Mexico’s Nuevo Laredo Fundadores Club joined the association with the help of Lions across the border in neighboring Laredo, Texas.
Today, Lions are serving those in need through clubs in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. As the largest service organization in the world, Lions Clubs In-ternational goes wherever the Lion-hearted are found.
The International Association of Lions Clubs was anything but international when formed in Chicago in 1917. At its inception, about two dozen clubs were scattered around the central United States in places such as Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Okla-homa and Texas. Lions suspected, however, that their group would soon live up to its multinational name. Service and volunteerism are contagious, especially when combined with a bit of fun.
It didn’t take long. Just three years later, in 1920, Lions became truly international with the establish-ment of its first club outside U.S. borders in Wind-sor, Ontario, Canada.
Located across the river from Detroit, Michigan, Windsor was a bustling border town in 1920, bene-fitting from the region’s booming automotive indus-try. Detroit, birthplace of the moving automobile assembly line, had just formed its own Lions club earlier that year and word was quickly spreading about the association. Windsor’s volunteer-minded citizens were intrigued. Through Lions Clubs, they
