These “I Can” student graphic organizers are designed to be used in an interactive notebook. You can use the prewritten graphic organizer, or you can give students a blank one and have them fill-in the blanks. I do this at the beginning of a unit after a discovery lesson and then we refer back to these “I Can” statements daily. Each day students evaluate whether or not they have mastered the learning objectives. This reminds them on a daily basis what learning goals we are working toward. At the end of the unit, I have students write a reflection based on their understanding of the concept we have been learning, the checklist, and formal assessments.

-Have students work with partners when they are self-evaluating their learning on a daily basis.-Have students use evidence from their daily practice and formative assessments to support their claims on their progress.
