“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you.”— Philippians 1:3-4
My heart is filled with gratitude for all the people who made Lent and Easter such a meaningful season here at the church. From our Connect group leaders to members of the choir, MasterChorale, praise band, hospitality team, greeters, ushers, and staff who helped us celebrate holy week and Easter Sunday in such a powerful way, I am very grateful. On Easter Sunday, we collected around $9,000 to help partner in the recovery efforts with the United Methodist Church in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria. This donation will be given to the Greater NJ Annual Conference in May when the Bishop of Puerto Rico will come speak at the reception and receive gifts from churches across New Jersey. Thank you for helping to make that possible! I am also grateful for the overwhelmingly positive participation that we received in our church-wide survey, which will help inform a process of visioning and planning our ministries for the next three years. To date, we have received almost 400 responses from across all age groups and different worship services, as well as people who connect with us online and from out of state.
The survey has helped us to clearly understand a few key areas of consideration for our congregation:
• Worship is where people feel most connected to God and the faith community• Daily reflections, the app, and other sources for inspiration are important to our church• Small groups and mission opportunities are areas where people want to be the most connected • The two biggest faith challenges people face are how to live out their faith and believing in good in the face of evil
• The top mission priority for our church is breaking the cycle of poverty• The most important focus for our congregation should be to reach younger families and offer vibrant children’s ministry• People most value about our church is our broad spectrum of theology and politics
While this survey is already proving to be very valuable in providing vision for the future, it is only one piece of a greater process already in motion. The next important step will be for us to hear from the congregation as a whole at a church-wide meeting on May 6 in Fellowship Hall. This is a very exciting and important opportunity for any member to come and learn more about and share their dreams and hopes for our church goals, priorities and strategies for the future.
I look forward to being in dialogue and journeying with you this next season in all that God will be doing through and around us.
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Chris Heckert, Sr. Pastor

CHURCH-WIDE MEETING - MAY 6There will be a church-wide meeting on Sunday, May 6 at 7pm in Fellowship Hall. At this meeting, we will share the findings from the congregational survey that went out in March. As we listen to the hopes and needs of our greater community, we will explore in this meeting where there is energy around our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, and how God is calling us to live into this mission at HUMC now and into the next few years. This conversation will help inform the strategic plan that is being put together to guide our staff, programs, and financial resources over the next three years. Your voice is important as we discover what God is doing in and through our community!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS SPIRITS!The Easter story was alive through your generosity this past month! On Easter Sunday, we raised $9,000.00 to support the ongoing rebuilding and restoration effort in Puerto Rico, as we seek to break the silence following Hurricane Maria with hope and restoration. From the generous contributions of flowers from the congregation, and the gift of time from many HUMC volunteers, over 40 people were visited and reminded that they are in our prayers this Easter season. Additionally, the NJ MasterChorale, under the direction of Dr. William Gorton and with countless hours of hard work and preparation from MasterChorale members, presented Mozart’s “Grand Mass in C Minor,” blessing listeners with the gift of inspiring music. Each time we share of our gifts and talents, we help make God’s love and grace visible in the world around us. Thank you for the ways in which you have embodied Christ’s love this Easter!

Our listeners were truly blessed, and many told me so. I’m looking forward to more great things to come with you all!
