A clash between two

different wants

that cannot be achieved

at the same time and

in the same place

To adopt this way of thinking it is required to:

Analyze the problem in a fair way.

Shift the focus form the Wants to the Needs.

Find alternative ways to satisfy the

significant needs of each side.

The CLOUD is a logical thinking tool

we use in order to analyze a conflict situation.

One side's Want

Other side's Want

One side's Need

Other side's Need

Commonobjective

The broken arrow symbolize the conflict -

the WANTS can not exist simultaneously.

The NEED is the reason why each side insists on getting what they

want.

In order to satisfy the NEED it is necessary to achieve the WANT.

The COMMON OBJECTIVE is a situation both sides wish to

have,

but in order for it to exist each side must satisfy his/her NEEDS.

Zana Borisavljevic, TOC for Intercultural Dialogue, 2013

Constructing the CLOUD –

guidelines:

1. First decide if it is an external or internal conflict.

Then, identify the sides involved in the conflict.

2. Identify each side’s want.

The Wants must be verbalized as opposites.

Zana Borisavljevic, TOC for Intercultural Dialogue, 2013

Constructing the CLOUD –

guidelines:

3. Identify each side’s Need.

Questions to help identify the Needs:

Why do we want this Want? In order to…

What Need are we trying to satisfy by this Want?

Why is this Want important to us? In order to…

What does this Want give us?

What are we trying to achieve by this Want?

Which important Need will be jeopardized if we give

up on our Want?

3) Internal conflict

A manager finds out that there has been

some stock missing from the stockroom due

to the negligence of the guard. He is angry

because that has happened but

isn’t sure what to do about it.

Story line:

During one of the breaks, a group of children had gathered to play basketball.

The guys really liked to play it and enjoyed the competition and the excitement.

During the preparations for the game, David showed up and requested to join the

game. David really enjoyed being with his friends and did not want to stay out of

the game. The problem was that David is not such a good player so the rest of

the kids did not want him to join the game. David was offended and started to

interrupt the game.

Read the story, construct the cloud and try intuitively to find Win-Win solutions.
