A presentation of an analysis carried on two brands of cement as a part of the project work awarded by IQAC cell of Tinsukia College to the students of the Department of Chemistry.

Report on a qualitative analysis carried out on two brands of Portland

Cement.

Physical Appearance:- Gray, Amorphous.

Uses:- Making concrete, Mortar, Masonry.

Raw materials:- Limestone, Clay, Gypsum (Calcium

Sulphate) , Coal and Water.

The experiment was carried out in two

groups.

Group-I analysed Sample A

Group-II analysed Sample B

Group-II: Shubhadeep, Gopal, Prasenjeet, Satish, Md. Ruhul,

Santosh.

Sample-B> Star Cement

d. Preparation of Standard KMnO4 soln

a)0.5 gm of cement is transported to a 250 ml beaker.

b)About 100 ml of hot water is gradually added to the beaker in such a manner that cement is in complete suspension.

c)About 30 ml of concentrated HCl is added gradually. During the addition the mixture is vigourously stirred with a glass rod for 10 minutes.

d)Then a few drops of Br water is added and the solution is rapidly boiled for few minutes to effect complete solution of practically everything but a few flacks of silica.

e)This is directly filtered out into a 250 ml volumetric flask by adding distilled water.

f)This is the Stock solution.

a)75 ml of the stock solution is taken into a 250 ml beaker.

b)1-2 ml of concentrated HNO3 is added and heated for 3 minutes. 100 ml of distilled water is then added.

c)1-2 gm of NH4Cl is added.

d)It is then boiled for a few minutes. 1:1 NH4OH is added dropwise with stirring with a glass rod until the smell of Ammonia remains.

e)The precipitate of Ferric Hydroxide appears.

f)The beaker is now placed on a hot wire gauge. The appearance of colourless supernatent liquid indicates complete precipitation.

g)The precipitate is filtered with a filter paper. (Whatmann no. 41).

h)The volume of the filtrate is reduced to about 100 ml by evaporation.

i)2 drops of methyl red indicator is added. 4N concentrated HCl is added.

j)Then about 10-15 ml of 10% oxalic acid is added.

k)1:1 NH4OH is added with stirring until smell of Ammonia persists. The precipitate of Calcium Oxalate appears.

a)The filtrate is washed with distilled water to remove chloride and oxalate .

b)The precipitate is now dissolved in hot 50ml 1:8 H2SO4

and transferred to a 250 ml volumetric flask. The volume is made upto 250 ml.

c)Ca ion is estimated by titrating with N/10 KMnO4 solution.

a)20 ml of standard Oxalic acid is taken in a 250 ml volumetric flask.

b)150 ml 2N H2SO4 is added.

c)The mixture is heated to 70-80 c and titrated in the hot condition with KMnO4 running from a burrete dropwise.

d)The end point is marked by just appearance of pale pink colour. The end point is noted.

a)50 ml of Oxalic acid is taken in a 250 ml volumetric flask and 100 ml of distilled water is added to it.

b)It is kept on a heated wire gauze to keep it warm (70-80 c).

c)It is then titrated with standard KMnO4.

d)The end point is noted.

Group- IStandardisation of KMnO4

Strength of Oxalic Acid: 0.0504 N

Volume of Oxalic Acid: 20 ml

Strength of H2SO4: 2 N

Volume of H2SO4: 150 ml

Burette Reading:

1st Reading: 46.9 ml

2nd Reading: 46.6 ml

3rd Reading: 46.6 ml

Concordant value: 46.6 ml

Group- IIStandardisation of KMnO4

Strength of Oxalic Acid: 0.0504 N

Volume of Oxalic Acid: 20 ml

Strength of H2SO4: 2 N

Volume of H2SO4: 150 ml

Burette Reading:

1st Reading: 39.9 ml

2nd Reading: 39.1 ml

3rd Reading: 39.1 ml

Concordant value: 39.1 ml

Group-I analysed Sample-A i.e. Topcem cement and found 0.142

gm/litre of Calcium.

Group-II analysed Sample-B i.e. Star cement and found 0.108 gm/litre of

Calcium.

The logos are properties of the respective owners.

Star Cement is of superior quality to Topcem Cement.
