The Central and Eastern European Countries are

• but innovation has not been sufficiently rewarded in their transition to the free market system.

4

Intellectual property produced by the academic sector continues to be taken without fair compensationbecause the research and academic communities are not well educated about research and innovation management.

Research and Innovation Management

5

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center views this research, innovation management and technology transfer collaboration as a long-term collaboration which is intended to help build and enhance:

•innovation management capabilities •internal expertise

in Central and Eastern EuropeanUniversities on a fast track.

Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training Program in the Central and East European Countries

6

In 1998, the US Government and the European Union entered into a research collaboration arrangement.

In 1999, Cedars-Sinai started to explore potential collaborations with European Medical Centers and Biomedical Research Institutes.

Cedars-Sinai, in conjunction with the EU Research and Technology Development Division, developed several project proposals.

Funding for such collaborations could be available through the NIH, NSF and the Fogarty International Center.

Partnership with CEE Universities for Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT) Training

7

February 2001, the first meeting between Central & Eastern European Countries and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center took place.

September 2001, Cedars-Sinai and four Hungarian Universities entered into Research and Technology Transfer Agreements and new partners from other Central European Countries were introduced to the project.

2003 CSMC implemented the “Bridges in Life Sciences Program™”.

2002-2005 Cedars-Sinai and additional CEE Universities entered into Research and Technology Transfer Agreements from Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

PHASE 1: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) in 2001 has developed the Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTTTM) Program.

PHASE 2: In 2005, in order to enhance the effectiveness of the project, CSMC implemented the Research and Innovation Management Training Program (RIMETTM) to train: •scientists •physicians •healthcare managers for research and technology transfer management.

PHASE 3: Next step is focused on building self-sufficiency of the CEE Universities by building a Strategic Alliance and Intellectual Property or “IP” Warehouse.TM

PHASE 1

Strategic Alliance and Networking:—Creation of Patent Portfolio—Training

17

PHASE 1 Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training (IMTTTM)

During the course of the IMTT Program, Cedars-Sinai and its CEE partners focused their attention on identifying the true training needs in the partner universities and institutions.

As a part of the IMTT on-site training at the universities trainees develop skills that will enable them to bring back a set of best practices which will fit the organizational structure of their university.

18

PHASE 2 “Train the Trainers”

Building Business Strategy:—Creation of Independent Organization—Training of Partners

Partner’s role: Independent Technology Transfer Management

CSMC’s role: Support role

In addition, by improving their own competency in the area, they can then help other Central European Universities to implement Research and Innovation Management Programs.

The need for skilled trainers continues to grow in order to meet the challenges and success of the Strategic Alliance for Research and Innovation Management and IP Warehousing.

Phase 3

Business Enterprise :—Developing Consortium

Partner’s role: Self Management of Inventions CSMC’s role: Technology Transfer Outsource

23

  Phase 3

24

PHASE 3: Strategic Alliance with Central & Eastern European Universities

• Building a shared patent portfolio– a so called “IP Warehouse™”– by CSMC and its Central and East European partner universities strengthens the presence of the partners in the Global Market.

• The strategic alliance allows each partner to receive a fair share of value from technologies created by the talented researchers and scientists throughout Central and East Europe.
