Why ?

Marpol Convention

• Annex II Cat X /Y/Z : 250 substances• Some 250 substances were evaluated and included in the list

appended to the Convention. The discharge of their residues is allowed only to reception facilities until certain concentrations and conditions (which vary with the category of substances) are complied with.

• In any case, no discharge of residues containing noxious substances is permitted within 12 miles of the nearest land. More stringent restrictions applied to the Baltic and Black Sea areas. x

-Disposal prohibited < 12nm to nearest land

- In a Special Area, cargo residues cannot bedisposed into the sea

- MARPOL requirements are the minimum;port states may be more stringent

Regulation 7 of Annex V states:

• Each party to the Convention undertakes to ensure theprovision of reception facilities at ports and terminalsfor the reception of garbage :-

1) Without causing undue delay to ships

2) According to the needs of the ships using them

• Each party to the Convention shall notify the IMO of all cases where the facilities provided are alleged to beinadequate

• Sweep and remove all solids• High pressure water wash all holds withwarm water (50-60deg C)

• Footprint/staining will be left behind on holdcoating
