Process of paper manufacturing

Preparing the wood:

Bark is removed from the logs in large, rotating drums and then made into woodchips ready for pulping

How is the pulp made? The pulping process breaks down woodchips into usable fibres and waste products.Mechanical pulping uses a grinding processto separate the fibres and is mainly used forlow cost, short life products likenewspapers. Chemical pulping‘cooks’ thechips to separate the fibres and is usedmainly for high quality products like modo papers.

Preparing the pulp

After making the pulp, it is prepared for thepaper machine. This involves ensuring themix of fibres is correct, refining the pulp, mixing in additives like fillers and chemicalsand finally cleaning.

Sheet formation

The pulp slurry (pulp, chemicals and water)is sent on a wire, or most commonlybetween 2 wires. The fibres are positioneddue to the speed difference between the pulpflow and wire(s).

Removing the water

At the start of the process the pulp slurry isapproximately 98% water. The water isremoved by three methods: suction, pressure on the paper sheet and heat.

Sizing agent solution (usually starch) isadded to the paper on the size press. Thepaper is sized by roller pressure in thecalendaring section size press. Thisoptimises the printing surface. Sometimesadditional treatments are made (offmachine), e.g. coating and / or

supercalendaring.

Creating the right surface

Making the rolls of paper

The finished paper is wound into jumboreels, then split into smaller customer reels. The individual reels are finished with aprotective wrapper for transport andstorage.
