Extended Response- Math

Some questions are worth more than 1 point. Students may be asked to explain how they got their answer or show/describe a specific strategy.

Math FactsStudents were expected to master their addition and subtraction facts within 20 in second grade. Fast Math will be implemented grade wide during our free time during the Cultural Arts block to ensure that every student knows their facts. If students already have their addition/subtraction facts, then they will be allowed to do multiplication/division.

*First In Math will be implemented in 4th and 5th grade. If a students tests out of Fast Math, they will be eligible for First In Math.

Changes in Math• Due to the switch to Common Core State

Standards, the majority of lessons that we teach will be compiled from a variety of resources. While we still have EnVision, we will only be using select lessons from EnVision. Lessons will be focused around activities and discussions. Because instruction will be so activity/discussion based, much of what we teach cannot easily be made up at home. Attendance is very important!

Absent Notes• Need to come back with the student upon returning to

class after absence.• Write on a separate piece of paper because the note

must be sent to the main office. Include:– Child’s full name– Teacher’s name– Dates of absences– Reason for absence

• All missed work needs to be completed and returned.

Homework• Reading, Spelling, & Math – Assignments vary by day.• Teacher checks all homework assignments for

completion each morning.• If your child has difficulty completing an assignment,

please write a short note on the assignment or circle problems so that we can provide support.

• Late homework will not be accepted unless due to illness or an excused absence.

• Incomplete homework will be completed during recess.*Students are NOT allowed back into the pod before or after school hours to retrieve forgotten homework.
