Background and Goals
BACKGROUND With the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) leading the creation of the ASEAN Federation of Chemical Engineering Societies (AFChES) in Manila in February, 2014, there are now an ongoing efforts among the member societies to come up with common standards for chemical engineering practice among the members of the ASEAN Com-munity. With ASEAN Integration now in full implementation in 2015, there will now be a free flow of trade and services among the ASEAN member nations, hopefully leading to One ASEAN Community. Moreover, the ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net), a research gradu-ate program collaboration between top Japan and ASEAN Universities in Engineering has already been in implementation since 2001. The Net-work aims to contribute to advancement of the industry in the ASEAN region through promotion of university-industry collaborative activities and enhance educational and research capacities of its member institu-tions through production of high-qualified faculty staff, promotion of researcher and student mobility. To complement the AFChES and AUN-SEED goals of cooperation and to contribute to the mission of forming highly competent B.S. Chemical Engineering graduates, the PIChE Metro Manila Academe Chapter and the PIChE College of Fellows have successfully organized the ASEAN Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Education Summit (AUChEEdS-2014) in Manila, Philippines last July 16-19, 2014, with the theme: “Educating the New Generation of ASEAN Chemical Engineers”.
GOALS G1. To convene chemical engineering faculty and undergraduate stu-dents in the ASEAN Region to discuss about the theme and come up with resolutions and/or action plans; G2. To benchmark B.S. Chemical Engineering educational practices among ASEAN Universities; G3. To promote friendly academic competition and cultural presenta-tions among B.S. Chemical Engineering students in ASEAN Universities.
What to Expect in AUChEEdS-2016 1. Around 600 faculty and student participants from ASEAN and local univer-sities offering B.S. Chemical Engineering shall be targeted to attend the summit. Free hotel accommodations shall be provided to the keynote and plenary speakers. A minimal registration fee of USD 100 (foreign) and PhP 1000 (local) shall be charged per participant to partially cover the cost of lunch, snacks, fellowship night, and official summit program. 2. Pre-registration on September 18, 2016, coinciding with the opening program of the National Chemical Engineering Week, organized by the PIChE. 3. The Summit will open with Prof. Richard M. Felder, distinguished professor of chemical engineering and author of several textbooks from the USA, giving the keynote address via a webinar session, focusing on the theme “Achieving Effective Learning among ASEAN Chemical Engineering Stu-dents”, followed by a key official of the AUN-SEED Network. 4. The keynote addresses will be followed by plenary talks from prominent faculty members from Asian/ASEAN universities pre-selected and invited by the organizers or nominated by their institutions to share their experiences about the theme. 5. Local and foreign Faculty participants and Student Reactors to the Key-note and Plenary Sessions shall be selected to interact through a series of discussion forums after each talk, moderated by PIChE-MMAC officers, lead-ing to a list of best practices and action plans to end Day 1 of the Summit. 6. To encourage interaction and friendly competition among students, 10 to 12 teams of 3-4 students and one faculty coach from selected ASEAN institu-tions shall be invited to participate in the second ASEAN Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Quiz Bowl (AUChEQB-2016) on Day 2 of the Summit. Please refer to a separate info sheet on the Quiz Bowl mechanics. 7. A plenary session to solicit comments among the delegates on a proposed Philippine 4-year B.S. Chemical Engineering Curriculum followed by innova-tive teaching demonstrations by selected faculty participants will also take place in Day 2. To promote social interaction, a fellowship dinner shall end Day 2 that will be showcasing talent presentations among the ASEAN stu-dent participants. 8. Day 3 will take the faculty and student delegates to a prominent engineer-ing school south of Manila, dividing them into teams who will engage in a mental, physical, and fun competition dubbed as the “ASEAN AmaChEng Race”. An Awards Ceremony and Closing Program will culminate AUChEEdS-2016.
9. An extra day will provide tour options for the participants: Option 1: Tour of Facilities of selected PIChE-MMAC Schools (Free); Option 2: Half-day City Tour of Manila (for additional fee); Option 3: Day Tour of the Historical Cor-regidor Island via Manila Bay (for additional fee).
