do / does – questions in the present

did – questions in the past

will – questions in the future

Negative Questions

It’s also possible to ask negative questions:

Don’t you work here? Isn’t she your cousin? Didn’t they talk to her? Can’t we help them? Doesn’t he love you? Aren’t you late? Etc.

Activity 1

Pretend you’re a journalist and ask questions to your friend.

Remember to ask questions using the present, past, future, verb to be and modals.

TAG QUESTIONS

To confirm information;

To check if something is true or not;

Affirmative sentence : negative question

Negative sentence: affirmative question

Tag questions: present

You like ice-cream, don’t you? You don’t like ice-cream, do you?

He plays soccer, doesn’t he? He doesn’t play soccer, does he?

Tag questions: past

You saw that movie, didn’t you?

You didn’t see that movie, did you?

Tag questions: future

You will go, won’t you?

You won’t go, will you?

Tag questions: verb to be present

We are friends, aren’t we?

I am your classmate, aren’t I?

They aren’t your sisters, are they?

John is very smart, isn’t he?

The movie isn’t today, is it?

Tag questions: verb to be past

We weren’t friends, were we?

I was your boss, wasn’t I?

They were your neighbors, weren’t they?

Julia wasn’t at the mall, was she?

The game was yesterday, wasn’t it?

Tag questions: modals

We can do it, can’t we?

I couldn’t travel, could I?

They must study, mustn’t they?

James shouldn’t work more, should he?

Mariana would date him, wouldn’t she?

Pay attention!

Use the correct auxiliary!

Present: do/does/don’t/doesn’t

Past: did/didn’t

Future: will/won’t

Verb to be: no auxiliary

Modal verbs: no auxiliary

Try to guess information about your friend using the tag questions.

Remember to use tag questions with present, past, future, verb to be and modals.
