"The life of a Christian steward can be lived out of an 'I
have the privilege to' heart and mindset instead of the 'I'm
obligated to' mentality. Even Blessed Mother Teresa said in
serving the poorest of the poor around the world: 'The
miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to
do it.' Blessed Mother Teresa was no doubt a model
steward."

Catholic Social Teaching Reflection
Call to Family, Community and Participation
All of us are social by nature and called to live in
community with others. People have a right and duty to
participate in society, seeking the well-
being of all, especially the poor and
vulnerable. This week, consider your
call to live and work in community, be
it within your family or in solidarity with others around
the globe. The Holy Spirit dwells within us. Will we allow
the Spirit to act?
Loving God,
We thank you for the many gifts you have given us.
Bless our prayers and sacrifices this Lent.
May these gifts from our table bring hope and life to our
sisters and brothers who suffer with hunger each day.
Unite us through Christ with the poor worldwide,
and bless our efforts to bring relief to those in need.
Amen.
APRIL APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER

protection of creation and the just distribution of natural
resources.
Hope for the Sick. That the Risen Lord fill with hope the
hearts of those who are being tested by pain and sickness.
From Our Pastor
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I always will remember when I was in grade school religious education classes and it came time to learn
about the Holy Trinity. The good religious sister who taught the class said, “Now children, the Holy Trinity is…
a mystery!” Then she went on to try and explain it – which made no sense at all! But she ended
by saying, “Remember children – it’s a mystery!” And that seemed to work much better. And
so, as the world turns, it is now my time to try and explain the Holy Trinity. I will follow the
same path as this holy nun did many years ago. First of all I must say, “IT”S A MYSTERY!”
Alas, now it’s time for the explanation…
The existence of the Holy Trinity is one of the core teachings of Christianity. One
cannot deny the existence of the Holy Trinity and remain a Christian – it is simply impossible.
We believe that God is one in three and three in one. Put another way, we believe that God is
three persons, yet one God. But what does this mean?
Let’s think of God as a relationship within Himself. A family or community of persons,
if you will. We use the word “person” not in a biological way but to denote a relationship. One
must first be a person before one can be in a relationship with another. And so, God the Father loves His Son
Jesus with a divine, powerful, fatherly love. Jesus loves His Father with a divine, powerful, love of a son. This
love then between Father and Son is so strong that it takes on a life of its own – the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit
then is the love of God within Himself which is then poured out upon all of us. So God IS love – not just loving,
but He IS love within Himself. And this love is the Holy Trinity – a relationship of love between persons.
So God is not alone. Where the Father is, there is the Son and the Holy Spirit. And the same is true for
the Son and for the Holy Spirit. Although the three Persons cannot be separated, they remain distinct from each
other. The Holy Trinity then becomes a model for the life of the Church which, after all, is a community of
persons. The Holy Trinity is also the model for family life. And so, we believe in one God who is a relationship
of love within Himself – a community of Persons.
Although the word “Trinity” is not written explicitly in the Bible, there are numerous references in both
the Old and the New Testaments that speak towards this reality. The early Church believed in the existence of
the Holy Trinity even though it was spoken of in a more informal way. By the 300’s, however, there was a need
to formally define exactly what we believed regarding the Holy Trinity. After all, it is a difficult concept to
understand and is easily open to misinterpretation. And so, in 325 A.D. at the Council of Nicea, the Church
developed the Nicene Creed which delineates in a precise manner what we believe regarding the Holy Trinity.
This same Nicene Creed we pray every weekend at Mass! Sadly, there were and remain many false teachings or
heresies regarding the Holy Trinity. Some have mistakenly stated that we actually believe in three gods. (The
heresy of tri-theism) Others believed that God appeared throughout history in various ways or modes –
sometimes as the Father, sometimes as the Son, and sometimes as the Holy Spirit. (The heresy of modalism).
Others believed that Jesus was not God but only perfectly human (The heresy of Arianism). All of these false
teachings were condemned by the Church.
And so we have an explanation of the Holy Trinity. God is a relationship of love within Himself which
He then pours out upon all of His creation. God is one in three and three in one. He is not alone, but rather a
community of persons. And if this explanation is not helpful, might I suggest we return to the old stand-by?
THE HOLY TRINITY IS A MYSTERY! And thus it remains. May God Bless You. Fr. Girotti
