“Weekend inthe Folk Style”

I t has a l ready becomea tradition for the fans ofPolish handmade folk art,other folk-inspired craftwork,and regional products tomeet up at Mazowsze ’sheadquarters in Otrębusy.That’s where the “Weekendin the Folk Style” event takesplace, which is a colorfulEaster fair, accompanied byconcerts.

It was the eighth edition ofthe event, during which theexhibitors showed visitorsvery interesting productsinspired by the folklore ofPoland. Shortly before theEaster holidays, the boothsabounded in Easter palms,pussy willows, flowers,Easter eggs of several kinds(e.g. pisanki and kraszanki),art ist ic cutouts , table

decorations, and handmadeEaster cards. As usual, therewere we l l - known fo l kc ra f t smen f rom L ipceReymontowskie, with theircrafts made from tissuepaper, and from near Łowicz,with their folk cutouts andembroidery. There were alsodelicious regional products –meats, interesting preserves,cheeses from Podhale,cakes, honey, and manym o r e . T r a d i t i o n a n dmodernity went hand inhand during the event –vis i tors could also buybeaut i fu l ceramics o rjewelry.

A musical meeting withMazowsze and their fans wasthe culmination of either ofthe two fair days. “Weekendin the folk style” is a specialkind of event, well-known bythe fans, and that is whythey come to concerts ingreat numbers. On bothevenings the auditorium wasp a c k e d , a n d t h eperformance hall resoundedwith music . Mazowszepresented their concert “TheKaleidoscope of Pol ishColors,” which most fully

shows the beauty andrichness of the stylizedfolklore. The ballet, with theirdirector and choreographerWioletta Milczuk, prepareda compilat ion of Pol ishnational dances, as well asr e g i o n a l o n e s , w i t htradit ional chants. Theaudience saw, for exampledances from the regions ofK a s z u b y , R z e s z ó w ,Szamotuły, or Lublin. Theprogram also includedelements connected withSpr ing customs in fo lkculture – the choir presenteda spectacular dance andvocal suite “Pszczyna,”named after a town in thereg ion o f S i l es ia . Thea u d i e n c e a l s o l o v e d“Krzemienickie zaloty”[ “ A d v a n c e s f r o mKrzemienice”], with a vocalsolo by Adam Czechlewskiduring one of the concerts,and by Ivan Melesh duringthe other.

The program also featuredfolk sings that the audiencesalways look forward to. “Dwaserduszka” [“Two LittleHearts”], with solos byKatarzyna Miąsik and Anna

Łukawska, and “Furman”[“The Carter”], sung by FilipMicek, are Mazowsze ’ssymbols that the ensemble isfamous for in Poland, butalso around the world,among folk music fans andother people.
