Who were the Ancient Greeks?

GOVERNMENT

CLOTHING

• The rich had clothes made out of silk.

• Women wore sandals and wool cloth.

• Men wore short tunics with long wool cloth wrapped around the body. They were usually barefoot.

HOUSING AND PETS• Greek homes were built with mud bricks, while

the floors were made with mosaic or plaster.• All the windows were high up so thieves could

not break in.• Birds, dogs, goats, tortoises, and mice were all

popular pets. Cats, however, were not!

FOOD and

DRINK • Eel, octopus, and squid--Greeks ate many different kinds of fish.

• Wine was prevalent.• Using honey was a

popular way to sweeten food.

• If they are not wanted,

some babies are left

outside to die. Sometimes

people pick them up and

consider them slaves.

• Children were allowed to play until age seven.

• Once they were seven girls had to learn domestic skills and boys had to go to school.

SCHOOL

• Only boys went to school because it was thought that girls needed to learn domestic skills.

• Students used papyrus to write.• Subjects: reading, writing, math, music,

poetry, sports, and gymnastics.

GREEK GODS

Greek Gods. • All of the Gods, except

for Hades, lived on Mount. Olympus

A few Gods and Goddesses• Poseidon= God of the sea. • Hades= God of the

underworld. • Zeus=God of all of the Gods.

He had a wife named Hera.• Apollo= the God of the sun

and medicine. • Artemis= Goddess of hunt.

GREEK CREATIVITY

• The Greeks created drawings on pots and vases to tell stories of battles and events.

• Looms were used to make clothes.

• To honor the Gods, Greeks carved statues of them.

MATURITY

• At 20 a boy would officially come of age.• Around the age of 14, a girl’s father would

choose a husband for her. The husband was usually much older than her, since men started to marry around 30.

• Brides would wear purple.
