Professional development principles

Learning environment

- Built on what the trainees already know, valuing the various informal and alternative strategies trainees use to solve problems.

- Include opportunities for the trainees to question, reason, solve problems, define goals and monitor their own progress by using estimation, mental math, computation and technology when appropriate.

Measure units

• Length / Surface / VolumeKm, m, cm, inch, feets, terrestrial mile, marine mile, light year, ha, “ar”

• QuantityDozen, “baniţă” , wagon, barril, platoon, company, regiment

• Weight Tone, tdw, kg, g, mg, l, ml, hl, “chintal”, “litră”, pound, barril, “galon”

• Speedm/s, km/h, Mach

Professional development principles

Design

- Begin with teachers as mathematics learners and thinkers. - Be a continuing process that is connected to instruction.- Be welcoming and accessible to all, including to literacy and language teachers.- Be evaluate with respect to its impact on teacher behavior in relation to increased trainees learning.

Professional development principles

The trainer

- Establishes a deep understanding of mathematics and its principles.

- Understands how adults mathematical knowledge develops, how to recognize previous misconceptions and how to assess and engage prior learning.

- Use a broad range of instructional strategies that utilize a variety of materials to meet learning goals.

- Understand how research can be used to improve their effectiveness as teachers.

Why?

• We say 2 kg cream, but 2 l butter milk?

• Degrees are used for: temperature, geometrical angles, longitud, latitud, army, professional level in education, grammar, mathematics?

• People weigh: nails, hoses, large cords?

• How do we calculate: 5% of 23.000 EUR?

• How do we write: One hour and half?

• How do we understand: 3 x day?

• How counts the money: the housekeeper, the coins colector from the coffee machine, the shop chief, the finance minister?
