Accreditation of Prior
Experiential Learning (APEL)
Mary Young
What is APEL?
 Credit for experience
Not what they have done, but what they have learned from that experience
Scottish Government encourage as it stops students from repeating learning &
saves money
Students like it as they feel valued, save time and money
Lecturers like these types of students as they can give examples based on
experience and share this with their peers
It can help to inform lecturers practice and connects them with the industry
the students are working in
How we started
Trying to fit life/work experience into modules (learning outcomes)
Difficulty was that life/work is not modular and does not have learning
outcomes
 Students found “university language difficult”
 No deadlines given
 Very few completed
Progression
 Working with Programme Leaders
Looked at knowledge they would expect a student to know once they
completed a year of study
 Bank of “statements of learning”
Students could choose statements which match their own specific journey
Set guideline in plain English as to what is expected
 Submission dates set
Module created, not as a teaching tool but only as a way of tracking students
and awarding credit
Aligns to Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)
SCQF Framework
Success
This approach has been very successful and also works well with large groups
Approach was changed in 2013, started with Childhood Practice
50 students completed in the first year
Since then bespoke version using this model have been rolled out to the
following Schools:
 Health, Nursing and Midwifery
 Education
 Media, Culture and Society
 Business and Enterprise
How does it work?
Students approach school, stating they wish experience to be taken into
account
Students are given a welcome pack which includes details on how to apply,
what APEL is and how to complete
Students then apply and enrol on the module “Making Experience Count”
Once student is enrolled they then choose from the list in their packs the
number of statements required ( 60 credits (30 ECTS) or above = 5
statements & presentation, less than 60 credits (30 ECTS) = 3 statements, no
presentation required)
Students are expected to submit their first draft by the first submission
deadline
Examples of Deadline Schedule
Statement Number Submission Dates
1 28th June
2 10th July
3 19th July
4 2nd August
5 12th August
Portfolio Submission 16th August
Feedback
Each student should submit their statements of learning by the submission
date, taking care to reference their work appropriately
Once submitted the programme leader will give feedback on this piece of
work
Feedback should be acted on and the final piece of work is then placed into
the portfolio
As the student progresses through their claim the work improves based on the
feedback given in previous statements
The cycle is continued until the student has submitted all statements of
learning
Each statement can only be submitted for feedback once
Portfolio of work
Once all the feedback given has been acted on, the student is then required
to place the final statements of learning in their portfolio
In this folder they should also put
Evidence to back up their claim, this can be workplace training certificates, plans,
schedules etc.
They must also reference their work and their reference list must also be included
The finished portfolio is then submitted by the deadline given for marking
Presentation
If credit claimed is 60 credits (30 ECTS) or above student must do a
presentation
Presentation should be approximately 10-15 minutes long
Based on a section within the portfolio (one of the statements of learning)
Should have time for questions and answers at the end
Final Stage
All portfolios must go through Subject Panels for credit to be awarded
Once credit has been approved it must be transferred to students record and
a pass is awarded to the Making Experience Count module
Student is then offered a place on programme at the appropriate level
