Inside this issue:
Lent Prayer Requests
The season of Lent is a time of
spiritual preparation for the celebration
of Easter. Just as Jesus spent 40 days
in the wilderness as a time of
preparation for His ministry, we spend
40 days in Lent to prepare our hearts
and minds to celebrate the greatest
event in history: the death and
resurrection of Jesus. As part of this
this time of spiritual preparation, I ask
you to pray for:
Our Church
Last month I explained how and why
we are holding our 20|20 Vision
Meetings. We want to look forward at
the year 2020 and seek God’s
leadership for our church in the
ensuing years. I am specifically asking
you to pray, “God, give us wisdom to
see where You are at work, and
courage to follow where You
lead.” Please continue to pray this for
our church.
Our Staff
God has given us a wonderful staff at
St. Luke’s. They are a joy to work with
and are moving our ministry areas
forward! Lent is a busy time for
church staff, so please pray for all of
our staff. Each one of us and our
families face different challenges, but
please especially pray for Kip and
Michelle as they are in the process of
moving (closer toward church!). And
also Kelly and Erich as they have just
moved in the last week of February
and are expecting their second child
mid-March.
Our Holy Week Services
We are again planning to join all of our
music groups in our worship services
on Palm Sunday. Our Maundy
Thursday and Good Friday services
will carry forward our midweek
themes. And based on last year’s
attendance, we are expecting around
700 people at our three Easter
services. Please pray that we make the
most of these opportunities to share
the good news about Jesus.
God bless,
- Pastor Luke

Worship
“Every Second” ~ Kip Fox ~
Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither
storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more
value are you than the birds! (Luke 12:24 ESV)
It’s safe to say that as a society we have become less
patient. We’re not used to waiting. When we’re at a
grocery store and the line gets to be 3 deep, an urgent
message goes over the loudspeaker asking for more
clerks. When a light turns green and the car in front of
us doesn't go, we may be feeling generous that day and
give them a few seconds, but the chances the car
behind us will hold back on the honking are pretty slim.
And so when we are waiting on an answer from God, a
day can seem like a month. A week can seem like a year.
A year can seem like a lifetime. The inconvenience of
having to wait is what hurts the most. We are forced to
be uncomfortable when we have to wait. We start to
associate our lack of comfort with a careless God. But
God is just the opposite.
God cares deeply for you. He is with you every second.
He is loving you every second. He is guiding you,
watching over you, cheering for you, blessing you,
protecting you…every second. Take time out of your
day to meditate about that.

LEARN ABOUT OUR
CHURCH
Do you want to know more about our church? Starting
April 3rd, we’ll have three breakfasts and a lunch [April 24th

many as possible. They’re a great way to get to know
Pastor Luke and make new friends. The nursery and

Prayer Cards: Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 | NIV
We love to pray for you and your friends. Jesus calls upon us to support
and encourage one another!
Did you know we now have a prayer warrior team also calling on people
and seeing if there is any way we can help?
○ If you would like to be part of the prayer warrior team, please
contact Kathleen Hoffmann.
Helpful Tips:
○ We appreciate full names and contact information when filling out a
prayer card so we can easily follow up with the prayer.
○ If you run out of room writing your prayer request, please use the
back of the card. (And please try to write clearly.)
We try hard to list updates on prayer requests in the “Prayers of
Thanksgiving” section on the back of the bulletin before people are
removed from our prayer list. We’d love to keep all of the prayers on the
list all the time; however, because space is limited, we remove prayers from
the list after two weeks if we don’t have any contact information for the
prayer request.
If your prayer is not on the back of the bulletin, please feel free to call the
church office and let us know.

(Fellowship Room)
Program: “A Tour with Ruth” by Ruth Berft
Mite Box and Devotion: Dorothy Johnson
Hostess: Edna Ohlund
At the end of January, the St. Luke’s youth group
served the I-Help ladies by sorting donations, making
sack lunches, adding a splash of color to the dinner
tables, and writing encouraging notes to include in
the ladies’ lunch bags. It was so inspiring to see the
care that our young people took in decorating cards
and sharing Bible verses with women they had never
met. Hearts were surely touched! Thank you,
Youth!!
In March, we are hosting I-Help on Easter
Sunday! Please join us in praying that God would use
this unique opportunity to share the Good News of
His passion and of the new beginnings that we all
have in Him.

Council Minutes Highlights - February 13, 2016 Financial:
Kathy Paulson sent the updated financials electronically prior to the meeting.
LCEF Mortgage Payable is reduced by $10,737.96 (which includes $1,478 of BTW donations) to $827,612.33 at 1/31/2016.
Elders:
14 guest connect cards were turned in at our services since December. Elders continue to follow-up with these families and individuals as well as inactives.
Pastor Updates:
2016 January average weekend worship attendance: 437.
2015 January average weekend worship attendance: 425.
Things To Note
- Our corner sign was repainted to match the copper color on the monument sign.
- Continuing to make progress in ROCK. Staff had four training sessions. The info sheets that people filled out in worship are being entered into ROCK along with photos from the photo directory. Kathleen is still working to set up e-mailing and texting services, various needed reports, fully-functional attendance check -in (eventually including systems for Sunday School), a private Elders ministry tab, e-giving, background checks, linking calendars, etc. Kathleen
has about 7 volunteers with various IT capacities working on these different aspects.
- Youth are providing/serving most of the Wednesday Lent meals (with other groups’ support) as a fundraiser for the National Youth Gathering. Youth are also planning on producing a video for use in worship to introduce the students who are going to the NYG and ask for sponsors who will receive communication from students.
- We continue to see growth in the 5-8th grade Sunday School classes with two new students.
- We worked to make Lent midweek evening services more family friendly, including a special ‘desert’ area in the church for children’s sermons on Wednesdays, a craft table in the dinner area where children are adding a page to a book each week and also creating a craft to hang on the lobby cross. Families were invited and informed about this via a postcard mailer. Caitlin, Kelly, and Kim have worked hard to coordinate this all together.
- FPU Legacy Class is started on Jan 19th. An average of 7 people have attended.
- Kim and Kip are developing our annual joint-music Palm Sunday services around the theme of “Prepare Ye the Way…”
- Love Our City (March 5-6) sign-ups start this weekend. New venues
include: Feed My Starving Children, Project CURE, ASU International Ministry, and United Blood Services. The Elders have taken the lead on coordinating many of these efforts this year.
- Sign-ups for the first two 20/20 Vision meetings on Feb 17th are full.
- Kathleen has 5 people on the “Prayer Warrior” team who are following up each week with the prayer request cards and sharing their updated info with Kathleen.
- Kathleen has 12 people interested in being involved in Stephen’s Ministry. There is some cost associated with starting this program at our church, but this could be a wonderful blessing to our church as people are trained to do hospital visits and other care ministry aspects.
- Senior adult trip to Shamrock farms is completely full.
Super Bowl party in courtyard had a full crowd, good energy, and people seemed to stick around for a long time.
Things For Discussion
- 20/20 Vision Meeting research and presentation.
- Reminder: Circuit church leadership gathering at Christ Greenfield 12:30 PM on April 3rd to discuss possible strategic-partnership endeavors.
Respectfully submitted,
Ryan Brooks

Helping Older Adults Be More Active
Physical activity is a key component to healthy living. Research
shows it can help prevent chronic conditions and decrease the
effects of aging. Despite these well-known benefits, adults in the
U.S. tend to become less active as they age.
Four Types of Exercise
It's important to include a variety of different exercises. This
helps prevent boredom and can reduce a person's chance of
getting hurt. The National Institute on Aging breaks exercise into
four categories:
1. Endurance, or aerobic, activities increase a person's breathing
and heart rate. They keep the heart, lungs and circulatory system
healthy and improve overall fitness. Building endurance makes it
easier to carry out everyday activities. Examples include brisk
walking or jogging, yard work, and dancing.
2. Strength exercises make muscles stronger. Even small
increases in strength can make a big difference in a person's
ability to stay independent and carry out everyday activities, such
as climbing stairs and carrying groceries. Lifting weights and using
a resistance band are types of strength exercises.
3. Balance exercises help prevent falls, a common problem in
older adults. Some simple balance exercises are standing on one
foot or heel-to-toe walking. Tai Chi is also a popular form of
balance exercise.
4. Flexibility exercises stretch muscles and can help a person's
body stay limber. Being flexible provides more freedom of
movement for other exercises as well as for everyday activities.
Simple stretches and yoga are examples of flexibility stretches.
Just 10 Minutes
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
adults 65 and older who are generally fit and have no limited
health conditions need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of
moderate-intensity aerobic activity (e.g., brisk walking) every week
and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week
that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen,
chest, shoulders and arms). Two and a half hours may seem like a
lot of time, but if you break it into 10-minute increments and
spread it out over the course of the week, it's more manageable.
Keep it Simple
Remember, physical activity doesn't have to be a big production;
it can be as simple as taking the dog for a walk or vacuuming. The
key is making it enjoyable. Here are some other everyday fitness
ideas:
Join a mall walking club or senior bowling league
Take a group exercise class
Swim laps in a community pool
Push a grandchild on a swing or play ball together
Many local organizations offer free or low-cost exercise programs
for older adults. Check with your community/senior center,
church, hospital or area Agency on Aging. Sometimes
transportation is even provided.
So grab a friend or loved one and get moving!
Anglers
Well, we had our first outing and we had a lot of fun. Not a lot of fish caught, but time spent
together and comparing our fish stories was a lot to take in. If you want to join us next time,
please watch for notices in the bulletin or talk to Kathleen Hoffmann.

St. Luke has an electronic option for making regular offerings. Contributions may be debited automatically from your checking or
savings account. Our electronic giving program offers convenience for you and provides much-needed donation consistency for our
congregation. You may set up donations for weekly or monthly and you will no longer need to write out checks. And, when travel,
illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending services, this program will allow your offerings to continue on in an
uninterrupted basis.
An authorization form is available at the information Center. You may turn in this completed form to the Information Center, the
church office, Joanna Parks, our St Luke Treasurer, or Kathy Paulson our Business Director.

“But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed” (Isaiah 53:5). This verse always astounds me on many levels, but especially for two main reasons. First, this was written nearly 700 years before Jesus Christ would suffer and
die on the cross. Secondly, in this one simple verse we receive the entire hope of Christianity! This Easter season, revisit this verse often in your time with God. Use it to remind yourself that Jesus is our sacrificial substitute and the reason we can sing with joy on Easter morning that “He is Risen!”
I hope to see you at our events this month. I enjoy talking with you as we hang out and form lasting relationships. Make sure you are “friends” with Luke Youth-Group on Facebook to stay up to date with activities. Also, if you ever need to get in touch with me for any reason, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or text (928.241.8038) or email (kelly@stlukemesa.com).
