TECHNICIAN VACANCIES The Community College follows a concept in

post-secondary education which is new .to Australia. It is an autonomous Council-governed institution, Which 1s obligated to provide courses of any type at any level to suit the needs of the community in Darwin and the Northern Territory. The College opened in March 1974.

Courses currently conducted range from sub-trade basic skill courses and hobby courses, through trade, technical and sub-professional courses to diploma and degree standard. General programs of study include Technology, Scil:'nce, Commerce, Business Adminis­tration, Liberal Studies, Applied Arts, Continuing Education, Teacher Education and Australian Linguis­tics.

The Council invites applications for the following positions, for the 1975 academic year. All positions are in Darwin unless stated otherwise.

TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM This program presents units in Aboriginal teach­

ers education towards the improvement of qualifica­tions of two and three year trained teachers , towards conversion courses for proposed Diploma in Teaching and Bachelor of Education awards, and, in 1976, will commence full course program for these proposed awards. Six positions are open to applicants with teaching experience preferably at school and tertiary level and qualifications app ropriate to tertiary insti­tutions. Appointments will be offered at Lecturer$ Senior Lecturer Grade 1 level appropriate to qualifi­cations and experience. The positions in their special­ized areas are:

., in psychology with special competence in the area of child grow th and development or evalution and measurement (or preferably both). One or two positions available.

* in philosophy of educat ion and comparative edu­cation.

* in general linguistics or t eaching English as a second language (or preferably both). One or two positions are available.

TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE PROGRAM - TRADES

The Trades Division offers trades courses for registered apprentices. sub-trade basic skills courses. ~echnical hobby classes, service courses for technician classes, post-trade courses and other trade based short courses.

Lecturers wlll be primarily required to teach any of the theory or practical subjects of their palticular trades. They may also be required to teach elemen­tary subjects in similar trades and some of the vari­ous trade related courses outlined above. Lecturers will have the opportunity to assist in curriculum de­velopment work in some of the newly established courses.

Applicants should have been apprentices, and have complf'ted an inden ture and hold a Trade Certificate in their particular trade. Post-trade or additional qualifications in the trade or in a related trade would be an advantage. Applicants must have had at least fi ve years experience as a qualified tradesman and te familiar with all aspects of their trade. An apprecia­tion of other s imilar trades would also be useful. Ex­perience as a trades teacher and formal teaching qualifications are desirable.

The appointee will participate in teaching and suoervise and co-ordinate the day to day operation of the Electrical Trades Section. The Section offers trade courses in Flectrical Fitting-Mehanics. Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Mechanics and Radio Mechanics as well as hobby, post-trade, and other related cow·ses in these fields. .

Experience as a trades teacher is essential and preference will be given to apnlicants who have had educational administrative experience.

This position is at Allee Snrings Community Col­lege - an Annex of Darwin Community College. The Alice Springs Annex. in 1975 will provide trade courses only in Electrical Fitting-Mechanics ancl Automot!Ye Mechanics. up to stage 2 level. The two trade lecturers at the College wil assist each other in providing ~hese 40 hours per week block release courses, alternatively, in each trade.

For this oosition the appointee will have to have a good knowledge of elementary automotive me~h­anics and experience as a trades teacher is essential. LECTURER GRADE 3 SPRAY PAINTING-PANEL BEATING

The appointee may be required to teach subjects of both the Vehicle Spray Painting Trade course and the Spray Painting or Panel Beating or both. Appll­cants should have a thorough knowledge. of. all ~spects of automotive body repair and spray pamtmg, mclud­ing colour matching. .

TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE PROGRAM - TECHNOLOGY

The Division is mainly concerned with the proV1-ston of sub-professional, or certificate, courses. These are post form four courses, fow· years part-time dura­tion which lead to the classification ~f Techni~al Of­ficer (or equivalent) in the Australian Publlc Ser­vice. There are twelve technical certificate co~rses being offered in 1975 in the general field? of Bui~dmg; surveying; Electrical. Civil and Mechamcal Engmeer­ing; Biology and Drafting.

Lecturers will be primarily required to teach in their specialist areas. Lecturers in certificate courses may also be required to teach some of the elemen~ary applied mathematics, applied sciences, etc. subJects which are fundamental to their area of specialisation.

Ap,pointees will have the opportunity to assist in curriculum development work in newly established courses.

The appointee will teach a variety of subjects in the general field of biology 1n the Certifica~e Course in Environmental BiologY. The course is ecologically based, and designed to train technicians for locally-based biology research establishments, including fisheries, for­estry, wildlife, national parks, the e~vironmen, animal industry and agriculture.

Applicants should possess a degree or equivalent in biology in which ecology or environmentally based sub­jects predominate; preferably with a bias towards botany. Research experience in these areas would be an advantage. LABORATORY TECHNICIAN­BIOLOGY CHEMISTRY

The applicant will be responsible for the efficient organisation of a biology-chemistry laboratory with an associated preparation-store room. Part of the duties w11l concern the ordering and maintenance of equip­ment and consumable Items. A major pa.rt of the re­sposibilittes w111 be the setting up of the laborator7 for
