PRINCIPAL MATTERS
Remembrance Day
Students participated in a school service on
Wednesday that was led by our Parliamentarians. All
students should be extremely proud of their
exceptionally high standard of behaviour at such a
solemn assembly. Our students demonstrate great
understanding of the importance of recognising such
special ceremonies. A special congratulations to our
musicians who performed The Last Post, Sarah
Morton and Will Shuhyta. This is a tremendous skill
and they did an outstanding job in a high-pressure
situation. Amazing effort! Congratulations and
thankyou also to Rudy Klein who did a stellar job of
reading The Ode.
I was also very proud of our two Prime Ministers, Frida
Aaso and Isaac Lavis, who accompanied me to a small
ceremony at the Cenotaph in Port Macquarie. We joined the other schools within our Hastings Valley Community of
Schools to lay a wreath on behalf of our school community.

NAIDOC WEEK
A variety of great activities have taken place this week to shine a light on NAIDOC
WEEK and the important theme of ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. There has been
ongoing work on our Bush Tucker area and Uncle Bill has guided our selection of
names for the garden to “Marroong Gillee Burray” which translates to ‘Beautiful
Sweet Ground’. After securing a funding grant, we have been able to work with local
artist, Tony Clark, to create a welcoming mural at the front of the school. Our
students also worked with Tony during the week to create a design that tells a story
of local Aboriginal lands and people. I have visited classrooms and seen students
researching notable Aboriginal Australians, writing creative poetry connecting to this
year’s theme and I was absolutely delighted to see students performing traditional
Aboriginal dances.
Student Reports
Teachers are busy working on student progress reports for Semester 2 2020. We
have had a number of new enrolments in Term 4. Teachers will not have adequate
information and assessment information in order to produce a comprehensive
report for these children. As an alternative, we would like to offer a phone interview so that the class teacher can
offer information on how your child has settled in and any initial observations of learning. If your child has started at
Hastings Public School this term and you would like to arrange a phone interview, please contact the office.
Year 6 Fun Day
This year has been jam packed with curve balls and challenges. It was fabulous to see our Year 6 students and
teachers create a way that the Year 6 Fun Day could go ahead and create a day of fun and adventure for all. Thanks
to our Year 6 students and teachers for your preparation and hard work that led to such a great event.

RUGBY LEAGUE GALA DAY
The footy is back! On Tuesday, Hastings sent two teams to a Rugby League Gala day.
Of the 32 players that pulled on the Hastings jersey, 19 of them had never played a game of rugby league before.
With only a couple of training sessions under our belt we boarded the bus. With the lack of experience and training
the coach was somewhat nervous. By the end of the day he was incredibly proud! Those boys who play outside of
school showed tremendous leadership providing support, encouragement, and advice in every game they played. The
Year 6 team played in the competitive pool and they came up against some strong opposition. Convincingly beaten in
their first match it would have been easy for them to drop their heads. Instead they got better with each game they
played and came away with a win in their last match. The Year 5 team were entered into a development pool and
easily won all three games they played. Well done to all players for their positive attitude and sportsmanship. The
future is bright for Hastings Rugby League.

WHAT’LL HAPPEN TO THE WATTLE??! Supported by the Australian Space Agency, the One Giant Leap
Australia Foundation is sending native golden wattle seeds to
the International Space Station in early December, 2020. In
collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) the seeds
will live in space for six months, returning to Australia in time for Science Week 2021.
Hence, “what’ll happen to the wattle?”.
Hastings Public School recently submitted an application to be involved in the "What’ll Happen with the Wattle??!"
program. In some great news, our school was judged to be a successful applicant and have been invited to be a
“Seeds in Space” school. Mr O’Dea and students from 2RN created a video application, along with a 200 word essay,
outlining the reasons our school would be a good candidate for growing the space wattle seeds. Reasons mentioned
in our application included …
Hastings Public School is surrounded by rainforest and we are a great site for growing more plants.
We have a student gardening club, assisted by our wonderful SLSO helpers, who care for our vegetable
gardens and would be committed to caring for the wattle plants.
Our school loves Science and it would be really interesting to see if being in space has any effect on the wattle
seeds and how they grow.
and explained the possibilities we have of what we will do with the wattle once it has grown.
The chosen schools will receive wattle seeds that have flown to space, plus
seeds that have not. The seeds are from the same seed lot. Students will be
asked to germinate and grow their seeds, recording data about the germination
and seed growth. Data will be uploaded to the ‘What’ll happen to the wattle??!’
app.
The 12-month to 2-year project will result in the creation of a nationwide map
identifying the location of Australia’s 'space wattle’ trees.
The project is an historic opportunity for Australian schools and students and we
are extremely proud to be a part of this project.
