The Service for the Lord’s Day Twenty Third after Pentecost
Reformation Sunday
October 28, 2018 8:15, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m.
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP
Greeting Karl Zinsmeister
One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
All: And also with you.
One: Let us prepare for worship.
Preparation for Worship O God, who alone can probe the depths of the heart, you hear the prayer of the humble and justify the repentant sinner. Grant us the gift of humility, that we may see our own sins clearly and refrain from judging our neighbor. We make our prayer through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
Prelude
(8:15) Fughetta on EIN FESTE BURG Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706)

Call to Worship One: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
All: And blessed be the kingdom, now and forever.
One: There is one body and one spirit; All: There is one hope in God's call to us;
One: One Lord, one faith, one baptism;
All: One God and Father of all.
One: Blessed be God who sustains and protects the Holy Church.
All: And blessed be God who guides and confirms us in our faith.
Amen. Alleluia!
*Hymn 624 – I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art TOULON
*Act of Confession
One: Let us put aside our good works and remember that we do sin and fall short of
the glory of God.
All: Lord of all, the demands of your righteousness are too hard for us to fulfill
alone, so we rush off with this excuse and ignore your law. You forgive our
iniquity and remember our sin no more, and we abuse this freedom as if it
were a license to selfishness, self-indulgence and self-righteousness. You
give us the gift of grace: atonement through the life of your Son, yet we
make it cheap without serious repentance. We fail to see the power of your
faithfulness. We are your people, but do we know you as our God? Forgive
us Lord, the sins we know in our heart. Save us Lord from the sins we hide.
One: God, our refuge and strength...
All: have mercy on us, write your grace on our hearts. Amen.

Our liturgy for worship this
Reformation Sunday is edited and
adapted from the website re:worship.
Today is Reformation Sunday,
observed on the final Sunday in
October. The Reformation began on
October 31, 1517 when Martin
Luther, a German monk and scholar,
hung his 95 Theses on the church
door in Wittenberg, Germany.
Our hymn today is traditionally
attributed to John Calvin. Calvin, a
native Frenchman, who lived and
wrote in Geneva, is the most
influential and important early
Reformed theologian. During his life
he wrote dozens of biblical
commentaries, theological books, and
sermons.
Our prayer of confession emphasizes
the majesty of God’s law and the
“impossible possibility” of
humankind’s calling to fulfill the
law. Theological ancestors used to
recite the ten commandments each
Sunday as a reminder of God’s law.
In the prayer there is a reference to
“cheap grace.” Presbyterians believe
that God’s grace, while free to us, is
costly to God: grace through the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus. This
prayer also alludes to Psalm 46,
which is the source text of the hymn
“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
which our choirs are singing at 9:30
and 11:00 this Reformation Sunday.
Presentation of Tithes and Offerings
Offertory Anthem (8:15) Jesu, Joy of Our Desiring (from Cantata 147)
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Jesu, joy of our desiring, holy wisdom, love most bright; drawn by thee, our souls, aspiring, soar to
uncreated light. Word of God, our flesh that fashioned, with the fire of life impassioned, striving still to
truth unknown, soaring, dying, round thy throne. (text by Robert S. Bridges)
Van Zimmerman, trumpet
(9:30 & 11:00) A Mighty Fortress Is Our God arr. John Rutter (b. 1945) See Hymn 275.
*Doxology OLD HUNDREDTH
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise God, all creatures here below;
praise God above, ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith from an Affirmation of Unity for Reformation Sunday
We share one faith, have one calling, are of one soul and one mind; have one God and
Father, are filled with one Spirit, are baptized with one baptism, eat of one bread and
drink of one cup, confess one name, are obedient to one Lord, work for one cause,
and share one hope. Together we come to know the height and the breadth and the
depth of the love of Christ; are built up to the stature of Christ to the new humanity;
know and bear one another’s burdens, thereby fulfilling the law of Christ we support
one another, admonish and comfort one another; we suffer with one another for the
sake of righteousness. Together we pray; together we serve God in this world.
WE GO IN GOD’S NAME
*Hymn 481 – I Believe in God the Father GENEVAN 42
*Charge and Benediction
*Closing Response Hymn ST. ANNE
Our God, we are a church reformed, a church reforming still;
We long to grow in your true Word, and follow more your will.
As faithful stewards we find joy; we need no rich display.
Lord, teach us all to use with care the gifts you give each day. text: Carolyn Winfrey Gilette
*Chiming of the Trinity The worship service ends with the Chiming of the Trinity.
Please be mindful of those who remain to listen to the postlude.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
*All who are able may stand.
Earlier this month, we explored
metrical psalms, where a poet adapts
a psalm text to a particular meter that
goes hand-in-hand with music.
Today, we are exploring pointed
psalms with refrain (or antiphon).
Psalms are given a tone and are
“pointed” using a formula that
allows the text to fit with the tone.
Our text is the story of Bartimaeus,
one of the most important healing
stories of the Bible. In the text, Jesus
asks the blind man, “What do you
want me to do for you?” How would
you answer this question?
Gustav Holst’s most famous work is
The Planets, of which the Jupiter
movement uses the tune for the well-
loved THAXTED that we sing
today.
*Denotes to be ordained and
installed.
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God is
likely the hymn most closely
associated with Reformation Sunday.
It was written by the German
theologian Martin Luther, and still
resonates with people today.
Hymn 481 is an old tune with new
words. The words are essentially a
sung recitation of the Apostles’ Creed,
the oldest of all Christian affirmations
of faith. Presbyterians and all
Reformed Christians are people of
affirmations. The ancient and modern
creeds frame the beliefs of the church
and account for what we consider the
essential tenants of our way of being
Christians in the world.
Each Sunday, we offer four
opportunities for you to worship with
us at White Memorial (8:15, 9:30 and
11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary and 11:00
a.m. OnPoint@1704 in Pickard Hall).
While you will notice differences in
music, location and worship
leadership among our different
services, what unites us in our
worship is our liturgy. All services use
the same Call to Worship, Prayer of
Confession, readings from scripture
and Affirmation of Faith.

Our liturgy for worship this
Reformation Sunday is edited and
adapted from the website re:worship.
Today is Reformation Sunday,
observed on the final Sunday in
October. The Reformation began on
October 31, 1517 when Martin
Luther, a German monk and scholar,
hung his 95 Theses on the church
door in Wittenberg, Germany.
Our hymn today is traditionally
attributed to John Calvin. Calvin, a
native Frenchman, who lived and
wrote in Geneva, is the most
influential and important early
Reformed theologian. During his life
he wrote dozens of biblical
commentaries, theological books, and
sermons.
Our prayer of confession emphasizes
the majesty of God’s law and the
“impossible possibility” of
humankind’s calling to fulfill the
law. Theological ancestors used to
recite the ten commandments each
Sunday as a reminder of God’s law.
In the prayer there is a reference to
“cheap grace.” Presbyterians believe
that God’s grace, while free to us, is
costly to God: grace through the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus. This
prayer also alludes to Psalm 46,
which is the source text of the hymn
“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
which our choirs are singing at 9:30
and 11:00 this Reformation Sunday.
