Preparation for Worship O God, who alone can probe the depths of the heart, you hear the prayer of the humble and justify the repentant sinner. Grant us the gift of humility, that we may see our own sins clearly and refrain from judging our neighbor. We make our prayer through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

One: Let us put aside our good works and remember that we do sin and fall short of

the glory of God.

All: Lord of all, the demands of your righteousness are too hard for us to fulfill

were a license to selfishness, self-indulgence and self-righteousness. You

give us the gift of grace: atonement through the life of your Son, yet we

WMPC Brass Choir.

Our liturgy for worship this

Reformation Sunday is edited and

adapted from the website re:worship.

Today is Reformation Sunday,

observed on the final Sunday in

October. The Reformation began on

October 31, 1517 when Martin

Luther, a German monk and scholar,

hung his 95 Theses on the church

door in Wittenberg, Germany.

Our hymn today is traditionally

attributed to John Calvin. Calvin, a

native Frenchman, who lived and

wrote in Geneva, is the most

influential and important early

Reformed theologian. During his life

he wrote dozens of biblical

commentaries, theological books, and

sermons.

Our prayer of confession emphasizes

the majesty of God’s law and the

“impossible possibility” of

humankind’s calling to fulfill the

law. Theological ancestors used to

recite the ten commandments each

Sunday as a reminder of God’s law.

In the prayer there is a reference to

“cheap grace.” Presbyterians believe

that God’s grace, while free to us, is

costly to God: grace through the life,

death, and resurrection of Jesus. This

prayer also alludes to Psalm 46,

which is the source text of the hymn

“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”

which our choirs are singing at 9:30

and 11:00 this Reformation Sunday.

a psalm text to a particular meter that

goes hand-in-hand with music.

Today, we are exploring pointed

psalms with refrain (or antiphon).

Psalms are given a tone and are

“pointed” using a formula that

allows the text to fit with the tone.

Our text is the story of Bartimaeus,

one of the most important healing

stories of the Bible. In the text, Jesus

asks the blind man, “What do you

want me to do for you?” How would

you answer this question?

Gustav Holst’s most famous work is

The Planets, of which the Jupiter

movement uses the tune for the well-

loved THAXTED that we sing

today.

It was written by the German

theologian Martin Luther, and still

resonates with people today.

Hymn 481 is an old tune with new

words. The words are essentially a

sung recitation of the Apostles’ Creed,

the oldest of all Christian affirmations

of faith. Presbyterians and all

Reformed Christians are people of

affirmations. The ancient and modern

creeds frame the beliefs of the church

and account for what we consider the

essential tenants of our way of being

Christians in the world.

Each Sunday, we offer four

opportunities for you to worship with

Reformation Sunday is edited and

adapted from the website re:worship.

Today is Reformation Sunday,

observed on the final Sunday in

October. The Reformation began on

October 31, 1517 when Martin

Luther, a German monk and scholar,

hung his 95 Theses on the church

door in Wittenberg, Germany.

Our hymn today is traditionally

attributed to John Calvin. Calvin, a

native Frenchman, who lived and

wrote in Geneva, is the most

influential and important early

Reformed theologian. During his life

he wrote dozens of biblical

commentaries, theological books, and

sermons.

Our prayer of confession emphasizes

the majesty of God’s law and the

“impossible possibility” of

humankind’s calling to fulfill the

law. Theological ancestors used to

recite the ten commandments each

Sunday as a reminder of God’s law.

In the prayer there is a reference to

“cheap grace.” Presbyterians believe

that God’s grace, while free to us, is

costly to God: grace through the life,

death, and resurrection of Jesus. This

prayer also alludes to Psalm 46,

which is the source text of the hymn

“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”

which our choirs are singing at 9:30

and 11:00 this Reformation Sunday.
