Southtown G&W Sausage Festival By Demetrius Johnson
The Southtown neighborhood in south city is burdened with dirty streets, rundown buildings, unusable parking lots, beggars, and a lack of foot traffic. It is a neighborhood with diverse citizens and small and big businesses, but unless you live in Southtown, you might just drive right through the area. Samantha Perrigue, co-owner of Southtown Pub, and Berto and Ivan Garcia, brothers and owners of Garcia Properties, are fed up and want change. The trio has formed the Southtown Improvement Corporation, a non-profit organization with the mission to revamp Southtown, the neighborhood that stretches down Kingshighway from Arsenal to Christie. Southtown Improvement Corporation wants street beautification, a beat cop, more people walking and patronizing the area and just an overall neighborhood change.
Change takes money. In conjunction with G&W Meat and Bavarian Style Sausage Company, the Southtown Improvement Corporation is putting on the inaugural Southtown G&W Sau-sage Festival June 4 from noon to 8 p.m. on Beck Ave. right off Kingshighway Blvd. next to Southtown Center as a fund raiser. The fund raiser will also increase awareness for the organization and inform people on how they can help out.
Southtown Improvement Corportation also wants to bring the arts to the area. Eventually, they would like to establish an art gallery in the neighborhood that will provide a place for visual and performing arts.
Southtown Improvement Corporation was founded in 2011 to improve the Southtown neighborhood of south city St. Louis. The non-profit organization focuses on street beautification, citizen protection, attract-ing new businesses, and helping the area go green.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREwMay 27 through June 19 • 8:00 nightly (except Tuesdays)
The Taming of the Shrew has been transplanted to a 1950s backyard scene, complete with an airstream trailer, a Cadillac Sedan DeVille and characters decked out in hoop skirts and poka dot shoes. Set designer
Scott Neale, who has created designs for Busch Gardens and SeaWorld, developed the show’s backdrop under the direction of award-winning Chicago director and playwright Sean Graney. Alison Siple, recently
named one of the five most prolific Chicago theatre artists of the decade by “Time Out Chicago,” will be creating the 50s-style costumes.
Shakespeare Festival St. Louis has entertained, enlightened and edu-cated more than 500,000 people in the last ten years, and has reached
over 200,000 students of all ages through our Education Tour, Metro Youth Shakespeare, camps, classes, residencies and workshops.
In keeping with the mission of the organization the Festival is free! The Festival is the only free, outdoor, professional theatre in the St. Louis
area, employing renowned national and regional directors, designers and actors for the benefit of the community.
Pre-Show Festival activities will include a nightly Green Show at 6:30 p.m. What, pray tell, are the Pre-Festival activities and Green Show? The
Pre-Show activities include a 20-minute adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew, which will introduce the characters and plot to children of all ages. The pre-performance Green Show will also offer entertainment
by local musicians, singers and dancers, and conversations on the lawn with local scholars.
The Festival is located in Shakespeare Glen in Forest Park on the east side of Art Hill in between the Saint Louis Art Museum and the St. Louis Zoo, just off Fine Arts Drive. For complete information about the Festival
and all Visit our Getting Here page for directions, public transport op-tions, parking information and more.
