To See Without Being Seen:
Contemporary Art and Drone Warfare
Now thru April 24, 2016 at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum on the campus of Washington University
at Skinker & Forsyth Boulevards
We, us, society are at the begin-nings of the drone age. A turning point in our use of the technology of surveillance and remote engage-ment is changing the way we live and understand the world. Over the past decade, the United States and other countries have increasingly resorted to drones, as part of a global network of image gathering and data collection to monitor collective life and target individuals. Drone use is redefining policing and warfare. Their impact is filtering into art and visual culture, generating new investiga-tions into issues of agency, power, visibility, technology, and fear.
It is not just the government, Orwell’s Big Brother, which is increasingly employing drone technology. We are spying on each other. In 2016 the FAA began requiring drone owners to register their drones. Over 325,000 people have registered their flying robots with the Federal Aviation Administration’s new drone registration system. That number tops the 320,000 piloted aircraft registrations the FAA has on file.
To See Without Being Seen: Contemporary Art and Drone Warfare presents an array of contemporary artworks that engage with the geopolitical aspects of drone warfare and surveillance. Comprising video, sculpture, installation, photography, and web-based projects, the artworks in this ex-hibition raise fundamental questions about undeterred surveillance and the amassing of data. The artists are challenging us to think about and engage in a discussion of where this mass employment of drones is taking us.
