2019 ASME/SME Student Manufacturing Design Competition

Thepurposeofthecompetitionistofosterinterestinmanufacturing,providethemanufacturingengineeringcommunitywithfreshnewperspectivesondesign,andcreateaforumforstudentstoshare their new and innovative ideas.Held during theASME2019 InternationalManufacturingScienceandEngineeringConference (MSEC), June10-14,2019atPennStateBehrend, the2019SMDC is sponsored by ASME Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED), and co-organized byASMEMEDandtheSMENorthAmericanManufacturingResearchInstitution(NAMRI).IntroductionOriginalstudentdesignsthatfocusonmanufacturingengineeringandsciencearesought.Anydesignofasystem, component, orprocess that canbeused topromote the art, science and practice ofmanufacturing engineering is acceptable. Examplesinclude;

RequirementsThe project report is limited to 3,000 words withsupporting figures and/or photographs. Items thatmustbeincludedintheprojectdescriptionare:

• ProjectTitle• Namesandaddressesoftheparticipatingstudents,withonedesignatedascorresponding• Thenameandsignatureofafacultysponsorwithcompletecontactinformation

A successful entrymight also include a description of the problem(s) being addressed and keyrequirements,afunctionaldescriptionoftheconcept/idea/model/system,comprehensivedesignanalyses, andexperimentsor toolsused,discussionofhow the concept improvesuponexistingdesigns,andastatement listingthepercentcontributionofthegroupmembersandanyoutsideassistance(e.g.,faculty,shoppersonnel).Duetothedeadlinefortheapplicationandthefactthatsuchstudentdesignprojectsareoftenpartofaseniordesigncapstoneproject,itisunderstoodthataworkingprototypewillnotnecessarilyhavebeencompletedbythetimeofthesubmission.Suchprojectswillbejudgedbasedonthedesignandanalysisoftheconcept.

ProcessEntries from either teams or individual contestants must be submitted in electronic form tomoneer.helu@nist.govandreceivedbyMarch4,2019.Eightfinalistteamswillbeselectedfromtheentrantsandwillbeexpectedtogiveanoralpresentationatthe2019MSECconference.Theuseofvisualaidsanddemonstrationofactualworkingmodelsarehighlyencouraged.

JudgingEight finalists will be selected on the basis of the project descriptions by a panel of judgesrepresentingindustry,academia,and/orgovernmentorganizationsrelatedtomanufacturing.Thefirstroundofjudgingwillbeapanelreviewofthesubmittedprojectdescriptionsandwillfocusonthequalityoftheprojectdescription,creativityofthedesign,andintegrityoftheanalysisandtestapproachforevaluatingthesolutioninlightofrequirements.TheeightfinalistswillbenotifiedbyMarch22,2019andareexpectedtomakeafifteen-minutepresentationfollowedbyfive-minutequestionsessionat the2019MSECconference. Judging for the final roundwillbebasedon thequalityofthepresentationaswellasoncreativityofthedesignandintegrityoftheanalysisandtestapproachforevaluatingthesolutionbasedonstatedrequirements.Judgingcriteriaincludebutarenotlimitedto:

• Communicatingtheproblemtobesolved• Effectivelymeetingrequirements• Integrityoftheanalysis• Creativityofdesign• Goal-driventestingapproach

• Impact of design on manufacturing cost,quality, or other manufacturing andperformancemeasures

• Qualityofthepresentation(ontime,clear,professional)

AwardsCashprizesandawardsofrecognitionwillbepresentedattheASMEAwardCeremonyduringtheconference.FirstPrizeis$1,000,SecondPrizeis$750,andThirdPrizeis$500.

EligibilityAnygraduateorundergraduatestudentwhoisregisteredinschoolfulltimethroughSpringof2019orbeyondcanparticipate.Bothindividualandgroupprojectsarewelcome,andindividualsmayparticipateinseveralentriesprovidedeachentryisonaclearlydifferentsubject.

TravelExpensesandSupportTravelexpensestotheconferencewillbetheresponsibilityofthestudentsand/orfacultysponsor.ConferencestudentparticipantsmayapplyforcompetitivetravelawardsfromtheNSFsupportinggrant(exactamounttobedetermined);pleasenotetheadditionalobligationsofthisaward,suchas participating through the entire conference and attending the Early Career Forum. Detailedinformationontheavailablestudentsupportwillbepostedattheconferencewebsiteandalsosentto the selected student teams. Each team is also eligible for a $500 supplement from ASMEManufacturingEngineeringDivision.
