he Batten Scholars Program is an endowed multi-million dollar
gift of Frank Batten ’45, an emeritus member of The Culver
Educational Foundation Board of Trustees. Mr. Batten retired in 1998
after 41 years as chairman of Landmark Communications, Inc., a
privately held media company. Born in Virginia, he graduated from
Culver Military Academy as a captain of Company C. He received his
bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and an MBA from
Harvard Business School.
Beginning his career as a newspaper reporter and advertising
salesman with The Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star in Norfolk, Virginia,
Mr. Batten was named publisher in 1954 at the age of 27. He
expanded the newspaper company by constructing cable TV systems
in the South and Midwest in what later became TeleCable. Landmark
subsequently purchased 10 additional dailies and more than 100
non-daily papers. In 1982 it launched its first national medium, The
Weather Channel.
Long a champion of higher education, in 2003 Mr. Batten donated
more than $170 million to seven schools and educational institutions,
including an additional $20 million to Culver Academies. That gift is
being used to enhance the quality of teaching at Culver – for faculty
development, curriculum improvements and additions, acquisition
of new educational technologies, and other innovations expected to
improve students’ educational and developmental experiences.
In the fall of 2008, Frank and Jane Batten presented Culver with an
unparalleled opportunity in the form of the Batten Leadership Challenge. The Battens pledged up to $50 million in matching funds
for every penny donated to the Culver endowment through January
31, 2010. And then the Battens upped the ante by offering to also
match every gift to the Annual Fund from April 1, 2009, through
January 31, 2010, with a like amount to the endowment. When the
Batten Leadership Challenge ended on January 31, 2010, Culver
Academies had earned the entire $50 million in matching funds
available, an appropriate and lasting memorial to Frank Batten, who
died September 10, 2009.
