Coronary artery Flow towards the heart Should be lamiar Contrary artery are hidden deep within
chest, constantly moving and 5mm in length
Diseased coronary artery• Is the plaque build up inside the coronary
arteries • Block flow leads to blood clots causing
heart attacks• Percentage stenosis relates condition
Flow characteristics in contrary artery
2
Use and understand fluid flow patterns in relation with diseased coronary arteries.
Construct 3D model types of plaque buildup Type I Bump Type II Rising climb Type III Normal
Graphs and simulators will show the pulsating nature of the 3 buildup types
Objective
3
Problem:How does the height of the stenosis effected the flow patterns and pressure differences?
Significance:Observations and research data can characterize the effects of plaques buildup base on the flow in coronary artery and understand factors of turbulence.
4
Constructing 3d models and classify them by three 3 types of plaque accumulation (bump, rising, and normal flow) using solid works programing
Preforming flow simulations with ANSYS programing
Generate 3D contour graphs with visual turbulences patterns.
Methodologies
5
Type 1(bump) plaque buildup
6
What have I completed to data? Collect of data, 3d model, velocity and turbulence plots
What more do I need to do? Working with ANSYS programing to generate detail simulations
What do you expect to present at the end of the summer? Visual simulations of plaque types and effects of turbulences, 3D model of artery
What unexpected problems have you encountered? Working with engineer programing and mathematical functions
What advice would you give to others who embark on the summer program? Revise your work and methods, make an effort to attend lab every day and work with your
mentor. How has the project changed your perception of research and possible
graduate school or career pursuit? Gives first hand experiences and a insight of what to expect on the next level improving
research. Other comments about the project?
Fluid dynamics can be useful in understanding the vapor pressure of gases and liquids
