David: Shaping a Godly Heart

You've Got to Have Heart

These are some of the last words of David David died at the

end of our lesson two weeks ago

You'd expect to end a series on a life with the account of a death

There are things we haven't said yet

Sermon will be brief Preacher with new

dentures preached 5 minutes "I usually preach

about 30 minutes, but this morning my dentures hurt"

Next Sunday went 1-1/2 hours "I accidentally wore

my wife's dentures"

Summarize things about David we should remember First things we

hear about David do not come from Samuel - he hadn't met David - but from God

In context of Saul's presumption at Gilgal

1 Samuel 13:13-14 NIV "You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

In context of Saul's presumption at Gilgal

(14) But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord's command."

In context of Saul's failure in regard to the Amalekites 1 Samuel 15:26-29

NIV But Samuel said to him, "I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you as king over Israel!"

In context of Saul's failure in regard to the Amalekites (27) As Samuel

turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore. (28) Samuel said to him, "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today

In context of Saul's failure in regard to the Amalekites and has given it to

one of your neighbors--to one better than you. (29) He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind."

In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

1 Samuel 16:1-13 NIV The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way;

In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king." ... (3) Invite Jesse to the sacrifice … You are to anoint for me the one I indicate." ...

(6) When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the LORD." (7) But the LORD said to Samuel,

In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

"Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.“ …

In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

(10) Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these." (11) So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?"

In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

"There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." (12) So he sent and had him brought in.

In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one."

(13) So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.

For all David's faults There was something

about David's heart that God liked

How did David live? He lived with a

mission

Each time he met one goal, he reached for another

As a young man, his goal was to become king Once he became king, his goal was to rid Israel of

its enemies and bring peace Once that was done, his goal was to build God's

temple

David lived and died looking forward

It is not important that you reach your goals

It is vitally important that you have goals

He lived with passion David had many

moods He was not like

most of us He couldn't just

keep his cool Whatever emotion

David was feeling, he let you know it

Emotional nature goes with creative genius

That was why David could write like he did

His pen pricked more hearts than his sword ever did

He built a kingdom around 1,000 BC, but his pen touches us today

We all empathize with David His brothers were

jealous of him His parents never

thought he would amount to much

He had friends turn on him - and try to kill him

We all empathize with David He lived on the lam The woman he

loved stopped loving him

His daughter was raped

He had a baby die His older sons died

in rebellion

We all empathize with David One son ran him out

of his home His country took

sides against him His trusted friend

stabbed him in the back

He had God say "No!" to his most heartfelt desire

We all empathize with David David was able to

take what these experiences do to your heart and put them on paper

He lived with vision He didn't live

thinking about his kingdom, but about Christ's kingdom

The apostles always pointed to David to legitimize Jesus

Genealogy of Jesus focuses on David Matthew 1:17 NIV

… fourteen generations … from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile … and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

Acts 2:22-36 NIV "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

(23) This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

(24) But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

(25) David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. (26) Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

my body also will live in hope, (27) because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. (28) You have made known to me the paths of life;

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

you will fill me with joy in your presence.' (29) "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

(30) But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. (31) Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. (32) God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. (33) Exalted to the right hand of God,

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. (34) For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

"'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand (35) until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'

Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

(36) "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

David was one of the prophets Acts 4:23-26 NIV

On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

David was one of the prophets (24) When they

heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.

David was one of the prophets (25) You spoke by

the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: "'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

David was one of the prophets (26) The kings of

the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.'

Anointed = Christ

Acts 13:22-38 NIV After removing

Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'

Acts 13:22-38 NIV (23) "From this

man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. …

Acts 13:22-38 NIV (32) "We tell you

the good news: What God promised our fathers (33) he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm:

Acts 13:22-38 NIV "'You are my Son;

today I have become your Father.' (34) The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words:

Acts 13:22-38 NIV "'I will give you the

holy and sure blessings promised to David.' (35) So it is stated elsewhere: "'You will not let your Holy One see decay.'

Acts 13:22-38 NIV (36) "For when

David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed.

Acts 13:22-38 NIV (37) But the one

whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. (38) "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.

The early church’s favorite author was David David's hope was

never in his kingdom, but in another's

He gave the clearest description of crucifixion

Psalms 22:1-31 NIV My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? (2) O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. … (6) But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. (7) All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: (8) "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.“ …

Psalms 22:1-31 NIV (16) Dogs have surrounded me; a band of

evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. (17) I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. (18) They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. (19) But you, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me. (20) Deliver my life from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. …

Three lessons from David

Allow sin no place in your life Sin entered David's

heart but it couldn't stay there long

He never got comfortable and calloused to sin

Compare David with Saul David's sinned

more than Saul Saul confessed sin

more than David Saul could confess;

David would repent Saul never let the

word sink into his life; David did

Psalms 51:16-17 NIV You do not delight in

sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. (17) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psalms 37:27-28 NIV Turn from evil and

do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. (28) For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. …

No matter what evil is in your life

Turn from it and do good and God will grant you security

Don't allow sin to stay with you so long that you lose your sensitivity to God

Be aware of the purpose of God in every circumstance This was the way

David handled: Delay. 10 years from

the promise to the throne

Attacks. Shimei. "Maybe God told him to curse me."

Discipline. God is punishing me to make me better

Three boys were challenged to race

Not for speed, but direction - who runs the straightest line? First looked at feet Second looked

behind at tracks Third looked ahead

at the man Third ran the

straightest line

David never lost sight of God Psalms 37:3-7 NIV

Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. (4) Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

David never lost sight of God (5) Commit your

way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: (6) He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

David never lost sight of God (7) Be still before the

LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.

When life is hard, take it to the Lord and wait patiently

Count on his grace all your life Psalms 37:23-24

NIV If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; (24) though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

Most people's favorite Psalm is Psalm 23

My favorite is:

Psalms 103:8-14 NIV The LORD is

compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. (9) He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;

Psalms 103:8-14 NIV (10) he does not

treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. (11) For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;

Psalms 103:8-14 NIV (12) as far as the

east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Psalms 103:8-14 NIV (13) As a father has

compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; (14) for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

You can’t write like this unless you are aware of God's grace Pick one word to

sum up everything you've ever accomplished - and everything you ever will accomplish

There is no better word than "dust"

Philippians 3:1-14 NIV

… If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: (5) circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;

Philippians 3:1-14 NIV

(6) as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless. (7) But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.

Philippians 3:1-14 NIV

(8) What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

Philippians 3:1-14 NIV

(9) and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. …

God knows that we are dust Forgives our sins David knew the grace

of the God who is ready to forgive the contrite and humble heart

If I learn nothing else from David, I want to learn how to keep my heart right before God
