THE CONQUEST OF THE WILD

WEST

OLD WEST AND WILD WEST

During the XIXth century the United States of America are expanded to the Pacific Coast. This area was known as Old West and Wild West.

The President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory to the French Republic in 1803.

.

The Louisiana territory included all or part of 15

present states and two Canadian provinces:

 Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas,

Nebraska and some parts of Minnesota. Most

Dakota, northeastern New Mexico, northern Texas,

the portions of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.

Louisiana west of the Mississippi River, including

the city of New Orleans; and small portions of land

that would become part of the Canadian provinces

of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

ACTIVITY: In groups, paint the Louisiana territory on the map.

The modern United States, with Louisiana Purchase.

This incessant and prolonged migration of

people moved westward ancient cultures

and oppressed ethnic minorities of

Amerindians.

In contrast , the period elicited significant

progress in industry, communications and

agriculture, in many cases at the cost of

intensive exploitation of human and

natural resources .

LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION

The Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the CORPS OF

DISCOVRERY EXPEDITION, was the first American expedition to

cross what is now the western portion of the United States,

departing in May, 1804 from St.Louis on the Mississipi River,

making their way westward through the continental divide to

the Pacific coast.

It started in 1804 and finished in 1806.
