Warm Up February 24th, 2014

1)What is biotechnology? Give an example of a profession you think might include it.

2)What equipment do you think American farmers used in 1850? What didn’t they use?

3)How is farming today different from farming in 1850? Give two examples (not related to question #2).

Guided Notes Mostly affects your circulatory (heart) and respiratory (lungs)

systems.

Can also affect other systems due to indirect reasons (such

as causing holes in your throat’s skin)

Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity – by state

Childhood Obesity – our current rate by 2030

Guided Notes

Mostly affects your liver and kidneys.

Excessive amounts of anything into your body (tobacco, alcohol just some

examples) can lead to cellular problems. Sometimes, it can lead to mutations, which is when your cells send DNA to

the wrong place, which can lead to organelle production problems, which in

turn cause problems in mitosis.

According to CNN—money & FORTUNE magazine:

BIOTECHNOLOGY!

How would you define

BIOTECHNOLOGY?

BIOTECHNOLOGY* -

the use of living organismsto solve problems & makeuseful products.

BIOTECHNOLOGY!

WHY?

1. Most job opportunities2. Great pay3. Great growth potential4. Fun tasks5. Rewarding work

Biotechnology offers…

Medicine…

It began BY ACCIDENT with Penicillin…

Biotechnology helps terribly burned people.

GENETICS…

{ { MEDICINE- making

antibiotics, insulin pumps, skin guns, prosthetic limbs, replacement organs.

How about using VIRUSES in

biotechnology?
