Most of the world's scientific academies called yesterdayfor an international convention to ban human reproductivecloning but allow "therapeutic cloning" for medical research. Their statement — signed by 63 national academies — wasdesigned to head off calls for a ban on all forms of humancloning when the United Nations debates the issue nextweek. A resolution proposed by Costa Rica and 40 othercountries, including the US, would ban the production ofcloned embryos even for research.According to the Royal Society, only six academies refused to sign: Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Slovenia, Spain andthe Vatican.

— Clone the cells and fix mutated genes that cause diseases. It’s the process by which a person's DNA is used to grow an embryonic clone. The process is as follows:DNA is extracted from a sick person, then is inserted intoan enucleated donor egg. The egg then divides like atypical fertilized egg and forms an embryo. Stem cells areremoved from the embryo. Any kind of tissue or organ, such as hearts, livers and skin, can be grown from thesestem cells to treat the sick.

Change— The government is introducing legislation to ban human cloning for reproductive purposes, and childrenborn through the use of donated eggs or sperm willalso be given the right to know the names of their donors.— Under current laws, a child born as a result of artificial insemination can’t find out the identity of the donor parent.— The government believes genetic heritage is important in assessing any health risks a child may face in the future.

5. The Court of Public

Opinion “When you see something that is technicallysweet, you go ahead and do it and you argue about what to do about it only after you have had your technical success," said J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the creators of the atom bomb. Scientist William Joy has been a leading voice urging caution on new technologies like cloning. "The technologies that are emerging in the 21st century genetic engineering, nanotech, and robotics-- have enormous potential, but they carry a hidden danger, along with this enormous potential, of a kind that I don't think we've ever faced before."
