Message from our President…
Well, summer is finally on the way out even if the heat is not. School is starting and
things will hopefully slow down a bit. We will not be slowing down our shag
schedule though.
SOS Fall Migration is just around the corner starting September 18th through
September 27th. Our club “Free Pour” will be on Saturday, September 19th from 1:30
until around 3:00 PM at the OD Pavilion. Be sure to bring your SOBS membership
card to identify yourself as a member. Fun Sunday and Fun Monday will be
happening on Main Street. Great bands are scheduled for entertainment for free.
Bahre has Fun Monday tickets for sale at $10 each. The money goes to charity and
you get a chance to win part of a $10,000 pot. Contact our VP Bahre Willis at
754-5370 to get tickets or see him at our dances before SOS.
Look for information about our big fundraiser coming up in October. We need items
to auction and raffle off as well as for door prizes. If every member were to get one
item we would have over 175 items. Katy O’Neil and Mary Ann Gregory will give you
more details. If you can’t participate any other way, please consider a monetary
donation so that we can purchase any needed items for the fundraiser. Look for
emails with all of the information needed. Our proceeds from this fundraiser
support Operation Uplink which provides phone cards to our active military
personnel. Keep shagging!

Absent: Pam Bacon, Secretary; Chuck Boney, Membership Chair; Ken Koehly, Webmaster; Robert Carter, Past
President; Katy O’Neil & Mary Ann Gregory, Operation Uplink Chairs
The meeting was called to order at 6:25 PM by Ellen.
Secretary‘s Report: A motion to accept the Secretary’s Report of July 8th was made, seconded and approved by the
Committee members in attendance.
Treasurer: Diani gave the Treasurers report from July 8th; the bank balance is $3,585.99 and $250.00 in the cash
boxes. Motion was made to accept July report and approved.
Old Business: The dances from July were discussed. Having finger foods at the VFW went over very well. There were
issues at the Moose Lodge with the hall not being prepared for us to have our social (air not on, floor not clean,
tables not set up properly, food and drink issues). This occurred even after Ellen met with John Finnigan, Moose
Lodge Manager, that week. Bahre and Ellen will meet again with John latter this month to discuss the issues in hopes
of eliminating the problems.
New Business: The August dances were planned. August 14th we will be at the VFW. We will have finger foods again.
Mike Hudson will be the DJ. Chuck & Sandy Boney will work the door. Joe will ask Judy Koehly or Pam Duncan if one
of them can lead the line dance instruction. August 28th we will be at the Moose Lodge. Food will come from the
bar/kitchen. Terry McPhail will be the DJ. Steve & Beth Uhl will work the door. Katy O’Neill will teach a special “ladies
only” shag step.
Committee Reports: Joe asked if we could include a summary of the ACSC meetings in our newsletter after each
meeting. Ellen will ask Pam Bacon to write a summary of the Summer Workshop meeting from July since Pam
attended the meeting.
Katy and Mary Ann were unable to attend the board meeting due to prior commitments, but Katy sent a proposed
letter to be used to solicit auction items for our major fundraiser, Operation Uplink. The board made suggestions for
the planning which Ellen will share with Katy and Mary Ann when they meet this weekend.
SOS Fall Migration is September 18-27th. Fun Monday tickets are for sale now. Bahre will coordinate the sale of
tickets. Tickets are $10 each with a chance to win any part of the $10,000 purse – first place winner gets $7,500.
The board agreed to pay for some tickets to given away as a part of our 50/50 drawings. Ellen will attend the ACSC
meeting on Saturday, September 26th at 10:00 AM. Our club “Free Pour” will be September 19th at the OD Pavilion
from 1:30 PM until approximately 3:00 PM or until the budgeted amount runs out ($375 drinks & $75 tip).
The next board meeting will be held on September 2nd at 6:00 PM at the home of Joe Malinowski, 1633 Golfer’s
Ridge SE, Bolivia, NC. The meeting was adjourned at 7:44 PM.

Greetings Fellow SOBS,
It is with great excitement that we begin the preparations for our “Operation Uplink” event to be held on Saturday,
October 24, 2015, Moose Lodge. This annual event includes a dance with legendary DJ John “Fessa” Hook, a Silent
auction and a multi-item raffle. Dinner and a full cash bar will be available at the Moose Lodge. All profits from
the event will be donated to the VFW’s Operation Uplink, providing free call days and Internet time to service men
and women across the globe. Hospitalized heroes here at home also benefit from the project. Over the past 11
years the Society of Brunswick Shaggers has donated over $20,000 to this worthy cause. Use this link for additional
information: [email protected] or call (816) 968-1155
We, your Auction Co-Chairpersons, are inviting you to contribute to the effort. Please consider soliciting items for
our auction and raffle. Your community businesses and friends will only know of our event if you help spread the
word. A restaurant which you frequent may be interested in donating a gift certificate; a store where you regularly
shop may donate an item or a gift card. A letter to introduce our event is being provided to you to print out and
take to your friends in the community. It provides a place for you to document the donation in order to properly
thank our business community members after the event. It also provides a receipt to the donor. You, yourself may
be interested in donating your own handiwork, whether it is a quilt, woodwork, artwork, jewelry item or pottery
piece. Please, only new, unused items. Feel free to purchase items to donate. This is yet another way you can
participate.
This year we will not be mailing out tickets for you to presell, but we will print out tickets which you may pick up at
the door at any of the dances. You may sell these or purchase them yourself prior to the event. The ticket stub will
be used for door prize drawings.
In order to plan for space and maintain organization we are asking you to get items to us as soon as possible. We
will accept items until noon on the day of event, but we would prefer to have them in hand by our October 9th dance
at the VFW. Here are several delivery options: you may bring items to any of the dances before October 24th, you
may drop off items at South Brunswick High School for Katy O’Neill, or call Mary Ann or Katy at the numbers
provided and make arrangements to drop off at our homes. If you will be bringing a large item to the event (grill,
furniture, gardening table, etc.), please assure that one of us is informed! We don’t want to run out of space!
Thanks for your support of this great event. Don’t hesitate to call either of us.

Hudson who kept the dance floor full as we had a nice crowd of 38 SOBS in attendance, 4 members of Coastal Shag
Club and 7 guests. The HOT weather didn’t keep our shaggers from dancing the night away! “Thanks” to Ellen Wester
for teaching the “Cuban Walk’” line dance! Also, a big thanks to the members who brought their “potluck” to share…
outstanding as usual!
Our August 28th dance was held at the Oak Island Moose Lodge with DJ Terry McPhail. We had 48 SOBS and 6 guests.
Attendance started out slow, but we had a nice showing as the night went on!. Thanks to Katy O’Neill for a great
“Do-Dah” shag dance lesson for the ladies. It’s hard to believe it’s September already! So come on out and enjoy our

September DJ Information...
Fellow SOBS,
Have you been on the dance floor lately? Summer has sure flown by. At our August VFW
dance “First timer“ DJ Mike Hudson sure kept the dance floor full and seemed to be well
received. He said that he enjoyed playing for our club and will look forward to the next
time. Thanks, Mamie for letting me know of his interest in playing for us. SOBS, if you hear
a DJ who you think our club would like-get his/her card and let me know.
Katy & I are continuing to enjoy Sunday afternoons dancing at the OD Pavilion with other SOBS, so c’mon down and
join us. You can never tell who will show up. You can watch the action on the OD Pavilion web cam anytime at:
www.odpavilion.net webcam - check out the music and the crowd. SOS Fall Migration is September 18th through the
27th - right around the corner. Our club’s “Free Pour” will be at the OD Pavilion on Saturday, September 19th from

Our September 11th DJ is Eddie Baker who has played for us several times. He lives in
Wilmington, NC, and is well regarded in the Shag Community, being involved with
beach and shag music for many years. Come out and enjoy another great evening with
the good turnouts at the VFW.
Our September 25th DJ is our former club President
Robert Carter. Robert and his wife Glenda are longtime
SOBS club members. Robert played our club’s first
Valentine’s dance and has been playing for us ever since. He began his DJ career at

Charles Smith & Gail Roberson...
Charles… is originally from Rebel City, NC, a small community
in Sampson County near Clinton, NC. He has 2 sons, Greg who
lives in Fayetteville and Jeramy and his wife Tina who live in
Leland, NC. They are the parents of his only granddaughter, 6
yr. old, Marissa.
He retired from the State of NC in administration with the
Dept. of Community Colleges. Charles was also in teaching and
worked for NC Dept. of Rehabilitation as a counselor and
administrator.
Charles enjoys outdoor sports, loves dancing, and likes to
travel. He began dancing when he was about 15 yrs. old at a dance club in Williams Lake, NC. He moved to Oak
Island in 1992 and would often go down to Fat Harold’s to dance. One night he saw Gail on the dance floor and
knew he had to dance with her and so it began. He loves the rhythm of the music, movement of the dance and Gail
by the hand! Charles was also President of the SOBS when dance parties began and grew to 100+ members within 2
years.
Gail… is originally from Newport News, VA, and moved to North Carolina in 1992. She has one daughter, Tracy,
who lives at Sunset Beach, NC. Gail is also the owner of Bloomingail’s Consignment in Calabash, NC. She met
Charles about 8 yrs. ago at Fat Harold’s when he asked her to dance and they’ve been together ever since. Gail has
a townhouse in Little River, SC, and Charles has a house in North Myrtle beach, SC, and also on Oak Island. They tell
people that they “live close by and visit often!” Her hobbies are dancing and decorating.
Gail has been dancing all her life, but her first trip to Fat Harold’s wasn’t until 2002. She loved the music and when
she saw the dance, she knew the shag was the dance for her. She took lessons from Hall of Fame Shag Instructor,
Judy Duke for about 3 years and was a member of the OD Pavilion Shag Club for many years, but joined the SOBS
after I met Charles. They have watched the club grow and met so many new members. They only hope it will con-
tinue to grow so the legend of shag dancing will live on forever.

Attended by Pam Bacon… The Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) held their 2015
Summer Workshop on July 10-12, 2015 at the Hyatt-Dulles in Herndon, VA. This event was
hosted by the Northern Virginia Shag Club (NVSC). This year’s meeting spotlighted the history
of the ACSC and the SOS events held at North Myrtle Beach, SC. A history and origin of the
shag was presented. A review and history of the parade was also given. The Keynote Address
was given by a NVSC member who is a retired Navy Chaplin. He spoke of three keys to a
successful shag club. They were: Service, Sacrifice and Welcome.
Service meaning to be of service to your club by serving on committees and helping in the setup/takedown of a
dance. Sacrifice in taking your own time to teach others the shag dance. Welcome in being friendly to all who come,
especially the newcomers. He stated that friendship was the most valuable asset of a shag club.
Other business included accepting the Ft. Lauderdale Shag Club as a new member club and the application for the
Sampson County Shag Club in Turkey, NC. Also, the Lake Norman Shag Club was awarded the 2017 Summer
Workshop. The 2016 Summer Workshop will be in Columbia, SC. Before adjournment all clubs were allowed to
present and promote their upcoming shag events. During the Saturday night evening dinner dance, special
recognition was given to Mr. Dave Bushey, President of the NVSC. Along with his wife Angie, he was instrumental in
planning this event. Unfortunately, Dave passed away from cancer just two weeks before this workshop. His wife
spoke of his determination to finish this project and all were thankful for his efforts since the workshop was a
success.
