Reminders: Deadline for extra credit and late work:

Fri, Sept 28. Lord of the Flies exam: Thurs, Sept 27

during class or during lunch on A Days next week.

Looking Ahead: Socratic Seminar: Tues, Sept 25 Beowulf test: Thurs, Sept 27 Second six weeks: Oedipus Rex. A

good portion of the play will be read for homework!!!

9-20-12 Objectives:

To read a text analytically, describing how language and literary techniques contribute to meaning and theme of specific excerpts in Beowulf.

To draw conclusions about universal themes.

Today’s Agenda: Answer question on a specific passage

in Beowulf. Group presentations. Discuss homework assignment.****if you were absent today, look at the question. Your section is “The Battle With The Dragon”, beginning on page 38. You can access the instructions for the online textbook from my homepage.

Universal Theme: While the theme of a novel,

poem, play, etc.. Is often expressed as a general statement about life, universal themes are widely held ideas about life.

Theme Versus Subject: The subject of a work might be

love; the theme would be what the writer says about love

Question: Looking carefully at your assigned

section, analyze the literary/poetic techniques used by the poet to characterize Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s mother, the Danes, and the Geats; how does the poet convey meaning and universal theme?

Homework: Compose three level 2 questions and

three level 3 questions from the excerpts we have read from Beowulf. Be ready to turn them in at the beginning of class. These will be topics for our Socratic Seminar.
